Joseph Robert Gill (June 27, 1930 - October 15, 2023)
Papa Joe went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 15th, surrounded by loving family. He is survived by his wife Betty Gill (nee Shetler) of 20 years; sons, Steven Gill (Terri), Scott Gill, Donald Husser; daughters, Judith Gill (Robert Buehrer), Susan Husser, Louisa Kourouniotis; grandchildren, Justin Gill (Sharlena), Kelsey Rybak (Brad), Morgan Gill, Jennifer Fisher (Nicholas), Kristina Hoffner (Jason), Matthew Kourouniotis, Terra Moreau (Kevin); sisters, Donna Rose, Carol Schario (Bob), and Lynda Bank (Denny). Hes been blessed with six great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by former spouse Patricia Gill (nee Widder) of 43 years, along with parents Clarence & Mary Catherine (nee Zeiger) Gill, and brother Thomas Gill (Anne).
Papa Joe lived a simple but full life and touched everyone he met. His simplest pleasures were sitting on his porch in Jackson Twp and watching the world go by or reading a book in his recliner with his weather station close by. Born in Canton, Ohio, where he lived most of his life until moving to Massillon, he graduated from Canton Lincoln HS in 1948. He decided that college wasnt for him, so he became a self-taught engineer to earn a living. He worked for various manufacturing entities during his tenure, with the longest being the Hoover Company in North Canton where he retired in 1990. Retirement life didnt sit well with Papa Joe, so he started his own Machine Shop called Brownlee Engineering in SE Canton. After many successful years he finally decided to enjoy the fruits of his labor and putz around in his home tool shop. There wasnt anything he couldnt build, fix, or improve.
Papa Joe enjoyed war history, weaponry, automobiles, motorcycles, and airplanes. He dearly loved his older brother Tom, who was a decorated Korean war vet. Together they would talk for hours on end about specific world conflicts. He also loved to cheer on the OSU Buckeyes and Cleveland Indians (didnt much care for the name switch). Most of all, Papa Joe loved his family, and he was unanimously loved in return. He was never hesitant to help a friend or family member in need, therefore the only travel he ever desired was to visit relatives who welcomed his wit, humor, and strong opinions on everything. He will always be loved and revered with the fondest memories and passed on knowledge.
Special thanks to close long-time friends Chuck and Kathleen Ferrari for their unconditional love and support, along with the professionals at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Med CTR for their amazing care and assistance.
