Our beloved Joseph "Joe" "JD" Lance, 85, of Ashland, Ohio peacefully departed from this earth on February 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 22, 1938 in Chatham, Ohio to Howard and Janice (Clapp) Lance. He was a 1956 graduate of Norwayne High School. Joe was preceded in death by his parents mentioned above, siblings Richard & Zola Lance, Burt Lance, Carolyn & Willy Edwards, and Billy Lance.
Joe shared 64 years of marriage with the love of his life, Carol (Winters) Lance. The life and family they created together was a true love story that emulates love, partnership, faith, and understanding.
A dedicated father, Joe leaves behind a legacy of love and guidance through his three children.

Adoring grandfather to; Luke (Sonja) Lance, Darla (Eric) Rivera, Lori Lance, Benjamin Lance, Britney Butdorff, Rosalynn (Matt) Jensen, Michael Glass, Brody (Taylor) Butdorff and sixteen great-grandchildren that all brought immense joy and pride to his life.
Loving brother to surviving siblings Mary Lance of the Atlanta area, as well as Janet & Bob Lemon, Judi & Bronis Eden of Mansfield, Ohio and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joe touched many lives through the various positions and memberships he held. He served his community with honor as a veteran of the United States Air Force, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Park Street Brethren Church of Ashland, as well as served as Fire Chief of the Jeromesville Fire Department. With 36 years of service at Columbia Gas, Joe exemplified dedication and hard work. Into his retirement he continued this work ethic as he drove bus for Ashland City Schools and served as a member of the Hillsdale Chain Gang. He took great pride in maintaining his pristine lawn, and refinishing furniture and clocks which brought him creative fulfillment.
Joe was known for his unwavering love and affection, often expressing his sentiment with the words, "Love you More."
In accordance with Joe's wishes, there will be no public calling hours or services, his final resting place will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Perrysville, Ohio. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Southern Care Hospice for their compassionate care during his final days.
Joe exemplified selflessness, compassion, and a willingness to help others, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. His spirit will forever live in the hearts of his family and the many dear friends who knew him. May he rest in eternal peace, we "Love You More".

I will always remember that he was just a man.

My favorite memory of Joe is when he would give me a ride somewhere as a kid.

It was often a really anxious experience waiting because I would often get scolded or I had to avoid him being critical the entire ride.
