Joseph Pires Obituary

Joseph A. Pires, age 78, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025, in Fairhaven, MA.

He was the son of the late Joseph A. Pires and Elizabeth (Kelly) Pires. Born in Stoughton, with a strong presence and an even stronger heart, Joe was a man whose size and rough edges could never overshadow the deep well of compassion he carried for others. Whether it was running to help in a time of crisis, offering support to someone down on their luck, or quietly showing up for those who felt forgotten, Joe never hesitated to act when someone was in need. His strength was not only measured in stature, but in his willingness to carry burdens, both his own and those of others.

Joe was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 1966, and was a proud Stoughton High School athlete. He held state records in Javelin and was a standout punter on the Stoughton High football team, earning respect both on and off the field. He went on to become a combat soldier in the United States Army and was proud to serve his country in the Vietnam War. He later embarked upon a lifelong career as a self-employed builder, working on homes and commercial properties with dedication and skill. Up into his later years of life, he was always busy with his work and owned a unique 22-unit property, taking on the role of both property manager and friend to those who lived there. His secret joy was helping the nuns at the Missionaries of Charity in New Bedford. He took care of the things that needed fixing and made sure they had food on the table. He also enjoyed fishing, if he ever had any spare time, but loved checking in with his uncles and cousins, and watching his grandchildren grow too fast. He will be greatly missed.

Joe will be remembered as a protector, a rescuer, and a quiet man of faith who gave people a chance even when they didn’t deserve it. For his family and friends, he was not just a dad, cousin, or friend. He was a steady example of love in action.

Joe is survived by his children Joy Pires Wilmouth of North Andover and Joseph Pires of Foxboro, and their mother, Maureen Pires. He was a larger-than-life Grampa to Samuel Wilmouth, Violet Wilmouth and Evelyn Pires. He also leaves behind many cousins, extended family, and friends.

Visitation will be held at the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park Street (Rt. 27), Stoughton, on Thursday, August 28th from 9-10 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Interment will be held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Stoughton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s memory may be made to the Missionaries of Charity at 556 County St, New Bedford, MA 02740, an organization that was very near and dear to his heart.
