Joshua D. Watkin Obituary

Published by Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home on Aug. 16, 2021.
Joshua David Watkin, certified arborist and owner of Watkin Tree Pro in Holland, MI, passed away while on the job on Monday afternoon, August 16th, 2021. Joshua was 50 years old and is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Amy, and their six children, Joshua and his wife Tiffany, Anna, Alexa, Micah, Elizabeth, and Isaac, as well as two grandchildren, Llewyn and Elijah and several nieces and nephews. Joshua was born in Hamilton, New York, in 1971, to parents Keith and Mary Louise Watkin, and has three treasured younger sisters: Sarah, Christiana and Leah all living in Holland. Except for three years spent in Sierra Leone (from ages 8 to 11) with his parents, Joshua grew up on his family farm in upstate New York. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1989. After Joshua graduated from high school, he spent one year doing mission work in Costa Rica before coming to Holland, MI to attend Hope College. There, he studied English and met his wife, Amy. Joshua had a work ethic that was unparalleled, and he built the business, Watkin Tree Pro, from the ground up. Joshua was incredibly skilled at what he did, and he always worked with intention and integrity. His work was not only a means of provision for his family, but also a way to serve his community and his employees. The most important person in Josh's life was his wife, Amy. Their relationship, from the beginning, was one to be admired. No matter the setting, Josh and Amy could be found together sharing in laughter and joy. Together, they made the best out of difficult situations and somehow managed to turn them into their best memories. Josh reflected Christ in the way he was compassionate, generous, loving, caring, and hardworking. He strived to help everyone he met and serve his community, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his beloved family. Please join his family and friends for the visitation Thursday, August 26th at Windmill Island Outdoor Venue from 4-8 pm. Please, send flowers only to the Lakeshore Vineyard Church or Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home for use Friday at the funeral service. (Flowers are unfeasible at the Windmill Island visitation Thursday). Funeral services will held at 11:00 am, Friday, August 27, 2021, at Lakeshore Vineyard Church, 710 Central Ave., Holland MI 49423. To view the livestream of Josh's service, please visit https://www.lakeshorevineyard.org. Interment will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Memorials will go to a Watkin Education Fund. We cannot imagine the pain that your family is going through. Although we do not personally know Josh's family, we became acquainted with him through his tree trimming business. We had Josh remove trees both at our old house and our current one. He was always so honest & full of integrity. He spoke with respect to his crew and made sure to clean up after a project was complete. Most recently this spring we had Josh remove a tree and hang a swing in a nearby tree. The sparkle in his eye when he discussed the tree swing with us was priceless. Not only was he thrilled to add this feature to our yard he was full of joy & mischief when he told us about the swing (plural? I think...) in his own yard for his kids. He had so much fun telling us about how his kids took his leaf blowers on & used them to spin. I can't remember if he was the one to refer to that as the "Vomit Comet" or if it was a product of the conversation. However, every time we use our own leaf blower on our swing we think of him & chuckle. We didn't know Josh well but from what we did know we could tell that he was a fun guy to be around. We are deeply saddened by the loss of 'our tree guy'. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Watkin family. Josh AKA Pooch was the kindest most genuine person I've ever had the pleasure to know. Playing soccer with him are some of my fondness memories. He was so competitive, but so caring and loving of everyone. There is no better definition of a kind man then Josh Watkins. He will be missed by so many. Although his time was way to short he will be welcomed with open arms in the heavens above. He was a devoted Christian and he is now in the care of our creator. This is a very tough, but keep your faith and live life in his honor. This would be a wonderful world if it could be filled with people that had the character of Josh. I am so sorry to his family, children and grandchildren. I will pray that you find the strength to move forward and always honor such an amazing person.

My nephew Joshua was a very special man. He was loving, kind, and so competent. Josh was the closest to a brother that my son Gary had. They were together on holidays, vacations, and finally at Hope College. We are devastated by Josh's death. My prayers are constantly with my sister Mary Louise and her family: Keith, Leah, Amy, Joshua, Anna, Alexa, Micah, Lizzie, Issac, Sarah, David, Remi, Josiah, Christie, Zach, Mariama, Lydia, Olivia, and Acacia. Josh was so important to everyone. Wonderful memories will live on forever.

Josh was a professional arborist for many years. He has trimmed, cut and cared for our association a very long time. There are no words that could possibly ease the pain of this tragic loss. May you somehow be able to feel all the many prayers. Most sincerely. Lynn Schweibert

Josh and his wife Amy have been customers at my coffee shop for many years, Josh LOVED coffee, but not as much as he loved his family which was honestly so admirable! His Daughter Anna worked for us and it was apparent that he was an amazing Father, instilling strong work ethics in his children! He was ALWAYS in a good mood when he would come to the shop, had a great sense of humor and treated everyone with kindness! A great Man gone too soon. May he rest in eternal peace. I'm honored to say I knew him.

hi Josh, will miss you. But at the same time will see you again one day. The trees in Heaven are much nicer than those here anyways and they don't need the work they do here. So you have a break. Thanks for making the world a brighter place and for all the wonderful Christmas and Thanksgivings at your house and for the fun fellowship. Memory Eternal.

I knew Josh through his business and adored his passion for trees, his honesty and work ethic. After this summer's encounters over hemlocks and beeches, I considered him a friend. I'm devastated to learn of this tragic accident only a short time after h

I am deeply saddened and heartbroken for Josh's loss and cannot imagine what his family is going through. He was my son, Erik's best friend in high school, and was so well liked by his classmates. Family meant so much to him and his loss will be most difficult. I felt fortunate to have known him and will always remember when he and Amy visited me the last time they were in Hamilton for his high school reunion. My thoughts go out to his entire family and friends.
