Joyce Graves Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pearson Funeral Home on Oct. 23, 2022.
Joyce Deibel Graves, 76, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.
Joyce was the light of so many lives, more than she probably ever realized. Her kindness and grace were given to everyone she met, and she dedicated her life to bringing happiness and love into all of the lives she touched. Joyce put her whole heart into protecting and supporting the people she loved, putting everyone before herself, and truly loving the opportunity to do it. She welcomed everyone with open arms, and she saw each day as a new blessing. She was dedicated and passionate about the love of her family and took care of everyone with a beautiful smile on her face.
She was born in Louisville, KY, daughter of the late Louis and Mabel Deibel. She was a 1963 graduate of Seneca High School, 1967 graduate of Centre College, and earned her Rank 1 Master's in Teaching. Her gift of teaching English was once again a shining example of her dedication to her students and commitment to provide them with an excellent education. From Jefferson County to Oldham County to retirement from South Oldham High School, she impacted so many along her journey.
Joyce was an amazing artist and could bring memories back to life in so many of the works that decorate her families' homes. Her love of the water was felt through years of boating with her beloved husband of 52 years, Peter, her children, and grandchildren. The peace and calm of the water, along with the laughter and excitement of the adventures were priceless to her. She loved to work in her yard, read, and travel with her family. There was nothing she did without purpose, loyalty, and love.
She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband, Peter Graves; two children, Shelley Graves (Gregg) and Grant Graves (Kim); four grandchildren, Grant Fuerstenau, Courtney Fuerstenau, Jack Graves, and Brady Graves; sister, Betty Ann Burhans (Kenny); sisters-in-law, Barbara Cole, Mary Smolen (Bob) and Marty Ramer; nieces, nephews and amazing friends.
The service to celebrate the beautiful life and legacy of Joyce will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 26, St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church, 6710 Wolf Pen Branch Road, Harrods Creek KY 40027 with a celebration of her life to immediately follow in Graves Hall at the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pearson's, "Where Louisville Goes to Remember."

Mrs. Graves was my English teacher in 1997. I have always remembered her fondly. She taught a poem called "My Mother Pieced Quilt" that I still think of to this day. Condolences to all who loved her.

I taught with Joyce for many years at Oldham County High School. Every morning before school began we would get together to share a few laughs. I will be out of town for the funeral but I wanted her family to know how much I thought of her. Carolyn Godbey
