Joyce Lynne Leatherman

Joyce Lynne Leatherman, 82, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on October 17, 2024. She was born on February 19, 1942, in Columbus, Ohio, to parents, Clemence N. Butts and Doris M. (Evans) Butts.

Joyce spent her younger years in Columbus and then completed high school in Bluffton, Indiana. She attended Lutheran School of Nursing and then started her nursing career at Lutheran Hospital. Looking for adventure, she moved to Indianapolis and worked at Methodist hospital where she met her husband, Russ, and worked for many years while raising her family. She contributed to the education of future nurses after getting her master's degree by teaching at J Everett Light Career center. She taught for several years until retirement.

Joyce enjoyed her grandchildren, quilting, knitting and holiday celebrations like Thanksgiving, Easter, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. She particularly loved trying to recreate special Christmas memories from childhood. Joyce prayed for her family and friends every day and had a relationship with Christ who sustained her through her suffering and has now welcomed her into his loving arms. 

Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Russell Leatherman; children, Lynna Leatherman (JP Hanrahan), Julie Amy, Wanda (Duane) Estep and Robert (Angela) Leatherman; 12 grandchildren; siblings, Nancy Cole, Karen Renner, and Charles Butts.

She was preceded in death by her parents. 

Visitation for Joyce will be from 1-2pm on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite) – 9700 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46250, with a funeral service immediately following at 2pm. The burial will take place at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
