Joyce V. Weisshappel, age 83, passed away on the morning of Saturday, September 27, 2025.
Joyce was born in Chicago, Illinois to Frank and Emily Sup. The oldest of 4 children, Joyce helped look after her brothers, Roger and Frank Jr., and sister, Carol – often pushing them around their neighborhood in a baby buggy. Every so often, Joyce would push them to the nearby railroad tracks to collect large chunks of coal that had fallen off the steam engines – a little extra fuel for their home's only heater!
Joyce was a teenager in the late 1950's and grew up loving the music of that era. She was a big fan of Patti Page and was the President of the Chicago chapter of the Patti Page fan club. While not a huge Elvis fan, Joyce was dragged to a concert by one of her Elvis-loving cousins. When Elvis walked near them after the concert, Elvis kissed Joyce's hand – which made her cousin extremely jealous!
Joyce started working in her late teens, first at Goldblatt's Department Store and later at Lindy's Restaurant. It was while working at Lindy's Restaurant that she met a local railroad worker named Ron Weisshappel. After a few months of dating, they figured that they knew each other well enough and decided to get married. Guess they were right because their marriage lasted over 56 years!
The young couple moved to the nearby suburb of Oak Park where they raised their two sons, Joe and Tom. Just like when she was younger, Joyce would often push Joe or Tom in a stroller around the neighborhood, either to nearby Mills Park or down the sidewalk along busy Harlem Avenue to the local Jewel grocery store. To earn extra money, Joyce made and sold beautifully handcrafted ornaments, centerpieces and other decorations.
In the early 1970's, Joyce and Ron moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin. While they had traveled through Green Bay via passenger train to visit relatives in Rhinelander, they weren't familiar with the Green Bay culture. When Joyce saw signs for "Booyah" around town, she assumed that they were some sort of Packers' cheer!
In Green Bay, Joyce joined the Elmore Elementary School PTA. Joyce also became a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts, an organization she continued to help even after her youngest son, Tom, was no longer involved. She was always willing to help!
Joyce was not afraid of hard work. She worked several seasons at Larsen's Canning Company in downtown Green Bay, enduring heat and repetitive work for long hours. Later, she worked at the Prange's distribution center. She then took a job in the deli at the Jubilee Grocery Store on Velp Avenue, coming full-circle to the type of work she started with as a teenager. Finally, her last job before retirement was with Godfather's Pizza near Lambeau Field. Of all her jobs, Joyce loved that one the best!
Joyce loved being a grandma – first to Kristin, then to Kate and finally to Lucas. Later, she became a great-grandma to Kaden, Karter and Christian. Joyce loved to spoil them all!
As she had cared for her brothers and sister when she was younger, Joyce once again became a caregiver for Ron as his health began to decline in 2006. As the burdens of caregiving increased, Joyce's own health began to decline. Between 2009 and 2017, she lost her brother, Frank, her sister, Carol, and finally her husband, Ron. For a person to whom family meant so much, these losses also took a major toll on her health.
While Joyce's physical health was failing, her mental strength was strong. Over the past few years, she made it through several long hospital stays even as some medical staff were certain she wouldn't. Joyce was a fighter!
In the end, even the best fighters tire out. And when the time came for Joyce to leave this world, she did it surrounded by her family.
Joyce will be loved and forever missed by her sons Joe (Kathy) Weisshappel and Tom (Sara) Weisshappel; her granddaughters Kristin (Josh) Lawrence and Kate Weisshappel; her grandson Lucas Weisshappel; her great-grandsons Kaden, Karter and Christian; her brother Roger (Dorothy) Sup; her nephew Rafael (Carin) Marquez; her niece Lisa Marquez; and many other friends and family.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 14 from 9am to 10:30am at Lyndahl Funeral Home – with the funeral service beginning at 10:30am. Lunch will follow the service at Rock Garden Supper Club.
Our family would like to thank everyone at Cardinal Ridge Residential Care in Howard for making Joyce feel at home this past year.
