Karen was born June 19, 1944, to Harold and Mildred (Brooks) Rankin in Perry, Iowa. She graduated from Perry High School and Omaha Art School. She became a commercial artist and worked in the advertising departments at Younkers, Des Moines, IA and Joslins, Denver, CO. Her artistic passion was expressed in all she did from designing and decorating homes, creating beautiful watercolor paintings, flower gardening, loving holiday gifts and personalized cards.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of nearly 50 years, Morry Mandelbaum, Urbandale, Iowa, step daughter Kathryn (Steve) Johnson, Boulder, CO, step sons Bill, Des Moines, Robb (Jean), Brooklyn, NY, and David (Perri) Boulder, CO, grandchildren, Molly Allbee-Johnson (Katie) Cedarburg, WI. Zoey and Evan, Boulder CO, Isaac and Hugo, Brooklyn, NY. And her sister Patty Rankin (Steve) Anderson, Des Moines, IA. Treasured nieces Erika and Erin Anderson, Des Moines. As well as nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends. Plus, her beloved cat, Jackson.
Memorials may be sent to the Des Moines Animal Rescue League or to a charity of your choice.
