Robert Lionel Kaufman, 87, died Sunday, August 17, 2025 at MercyOne Medical Center in West Des Moines. Graveside services will be held 10 am Sunday, August 24th at the Emanuel Section of Woodland Cemetery.
A beloved father, grandfather, and MD, Bob was born November 1, 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri to Dr. Julius and Sophie Kaufman. He spent his early years on military bases. Bob's father died when he was 9 years old and his mother raised him alone with the help of her family members in St. Louis. He attended University City High School, Washington University, and Washington University Medical School. Bob married Dr. Mildred Kantor and they had a son, David. He had an internal medicine practice in St. Louis for many years, before retiring early to enjoy life. Bob lived for the past decade in Des Moines and enjoyed every moment with his family there.
Patrons of the arts, Bob and Millie were supported the St. Louis opera, symphony, multiple theater companies, and programs at Washington University. They both taught life-long learning classes and attended even more. They were involved with many organizations and had numerous friends.
Survivors include his son, Rabbi David Kaufman; grandchildren: Hanna (Ben) Stone, Eliana Kaufman, Avi Kaufman; and their mother, Julie Kaufman. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred in 2015.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
