Karl Borden Lubitz passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on August 11th, 2022. He was married to his adoring wife Dorothy May Lubitz (nee Simon) for 74 wonderful years. He often attributed his long and happy life to her.
He is lovingly remembered as a dedicated and caring father by his four sons and their wives: Harry (Jane) Lubitz of Delray Beach, FL; Allan (Robin) Lubitz of Belmont Shore, CA; Robert (Judith Monroe) Lubitz of Atlanta; and Craig (Rhonda) Lubitz of Atlanta, GA. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren Kyle and Erin in Los Angeles, as well as Jon (Emily), Alex, Kelley, Steven, and Levi in Atlanta, GA. We think of him fondly, recalling his kindness, quick wit, exceptional recall for trivia, and love of sports, especially Ohio State Football.
Born in Cleveland, OH he was the fourth child of Harry and Celia (Barden) Lubitz. He was predeceased by his older brothers Irv and Phil and his older sister Dorothy Katz. He is survived by his younger sister, Yvette Blum.
Despite living through the Great Depression, Karl recalled his childhood fondly. He was a good student and enjoyed physical activity including gymnastics. After the start of World War II, everything changed for Karl. He entered the U.S. Army and was sent to the Asia Pacific Theater, notably the Philippines and New Guinea where the fighting was intense, and the conditions were extremely rough. He was severely injured by mortar fire and later contracted malaria. He received two purple hearts and several other medals for his meritorious service.
After his honorable discharge, he attended The Ohio State University on the G.I. Bill. It was there he met the love of his life, Dorothy Simon, who was from his hometown of Cleveland. They were married in 1948. After Optometry school, they moved back to Cleveland to start Karl's practice in Parma, OH. A family of four boys soon followed. They made an idyllic life for the family, first in Parma Heights, then in Seven Hills, OH. Karl continued to practice Optometry for 49 years, attending to several generations of patients until his retirement at the age of 74 in 1999.
Karl and Dorothy relocated to Delray Beach, FL and enjoyed a happy retirement in the Vizcaya community for 18 years. It was a time filled with family visits, world travel, continuing education, tennis, exercise, bridge, and many other activities. Four years ago, they relocated to The Phoenix, now called Verena.
Karl's long life was filled with love, family, friends, and activities. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. We celebrate his life and cherish our memories of him. His spirit lives on in everyone he touched with his kindness and good humor.
Services will be held at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, 11115 Jog Road, Boynton Beach, FL @ 11:30 AM. He will be laid to rest immediately following at the South Florida National Cemetery with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a charitable donation to Temple Shaarei Shalom, Boynton Beach, FL or VITAS Inpatient Hospice, Delray Beach, FL.
