Kenneth W. Dunn
Kenneth W. Dunn, 80, died at his home on Monday, December 12, 2022 with his family by his side.
Born in Hollywood, California to Richard and Geraldine Dunn, Ken grew up in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley. After graduating from San Fernando High School in 1960, Ken attended San Fernando Valley Junior College (now Los Angeles Valley College) before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley. He graduated from Cal in January 1965 with his bachelor's degree in forestry, and headed to Virginia for Officer Candidate School. He was commissioned on June 10, 1965 as an Ensign in the United States Coast Guard.
Stationed in Sault St. Marie, Michigan, Ken patrolled the Great Lakes for three years before being released from active duty at the rank of Lieutenant JG. He moved to Roseburg, Oregon where he worked as a forester for the Bureau of Land Management for a year. During that time he also attended Coast Guard Reserve meetings and was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant. In 1969, he joined the Trust Department of U.S. National Bank in Klamath Falls as a forester where he cruised and helped manage 135,000 acres of predominantly ponderosa pine forests for which the bank was trustee.
In 1985, Ken accepted an offer from Thomas Lumber Company and became the company's forester. He moved from timber seller to timber buyer, managing timber sales until his retirement in 2005.
An avid hunter, he hunted chukars in southeastern Oregon for more than 40 years. Several times he tripled (dropping three birds in succession) – not a common feat among chukar hunters. He also made many trips to eastern Oregon and Montana to hunt pheasants. He was fortunate to have raised and trained three incredible German Shorthaired Pointers: Miss Denio (Missy), Cricket and Pepper.
Ken also enjoyed fishing and spent many summers fishing the rivers around the Klamath Basin, as well as ocean fishing along the Oregon coast where he owned the boat "Two C Bears" with his friend of more than 65 years, Bill McArthur. In the early 2000s, Ken began making annual fishing trips to Alaska for salmon and halibut; he fished the Alaskan waters for 15 consecutive summers.
Along with fishing and hunting, Ken spent many hours on the golf course, traveling throughout Oregon and northern California for various tournaments, as well as golfing on the courses in and around Klamath Falls.
Ken was a member of the Society of American Foresters, and served as the local chair twice. He was also an active and longtime member of the Winema Hoo-Hoo Club and served as president multiple times, as well as holding nearly every other officer position.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Laurie Dunn, and his parents. He is survived by his daughters and their spouses Cindy and Oscar Galindo (Pasadena, CA), Kim and Terry Lasniewski (Nampa, ID), PJ and John Fettinger (Klamath Falls, OR), and Erin and Steve Tuttle (Klamath Falls, OR); grandchildren Graciela Galindo, Magdalena Galindo, Kylie Thompson, Keygan Lasniewski, Caitlyn Fettinger, Emma Fettinger, and Laura Tuttle; and his brother, Russ Dunn.
A Celebration of Life is planned for spring 2023.

My sincerest condolences to Ken's family. I had the pleasure of working with Ken as a "dirt forester" at U.S. National Bank during 1979-81. He was patient and taught me a lot about hands-on forestry. I fondly remember his ability to start fires on pitch laden pines to stay warm during breaks while cruising timber in central Oregon during the snowy winter. I also remember, less fondly, his beloved lunch box that fell off the snow mobile I was navigating one cold winter day. His lunch was salvaged, thank goodness for me, but the lunch box shattered into a thousand shards on impact. Thanks for the memories and rest in eternal peace.
