Kenneth J. Walker, age 75, of Flat Rock, Michigan, passed away on Monday, September 18, 2023 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.
Born on October 20, 1947 in Detroit, he was the son of James and Celine (Libert) Walker. On May 20, 1977 he married Theresa Kusak in St. Christopher Catholic Church, Detroit.
In 1971 Ken received his BS in Elementary Education from Mercy College in Detroit. In the summers while working on his degree, he was employed as a camp counselor at the CYO Boys Camp in Port Sanilac, Michigan, which he never forgot, and which fostered in him his lifelong passion for camping. However, his career path would lead him in another direction. He applied for a job at newly formed Wayne County Community College as an Educational Administrator, and remained there for 40 years until retiring in 2011. Ken would also eventually teach students, but college students, after he pursued and received his MS in Geography from Eastern Michigan University in 1991. Ken was especially elated when several years ago, he traveled to Washington D.C. where he saw his thesis on Basic Weather Elements displayed at the Library of Congress. In 1992, he began teaching an Earth Science telecourse at Wayne County Community College, which included a lab. His favorite lessons were on continental drift and of course, rocks and minerals. Ken built up an extensive rock collection which he cherished. His passion for rocks extended to some of his grandkids, which he greatly enjoyed.
Besides camping and rock collecting, Ken loved golfing, photography, basketball, and sailing. He was a huge Star Wars fan, and was interested in anything that had to do with space. Moreover, he was a talented piano player, constantly playing at home and at times, sharing his talents with family and at church and community events. Furthermore, his athletic talents and passion for basketball led him to playing as a starting guard on Mercy College's basketball team, although barely 5 feet 7 inches tall.
He was very proud of his sons and they will tell you so themselves. He even made them scrapbooks of all of their achievements over the years. And he loved his 10 grandkids. One of the last things he did was to buy all the kids an adopt a puppy or kitten toy. He even wanted to help the kids fill out the proper paper work.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, John.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa Walker; sons, Kevin (Kara), Kurtis, Nicholas (Sara), Anthony (Brittany); grandchildren, Hayden, Joseph, Luke, Avery, Stella, Skylar, Gabriel, Alyse, Oliver, Abigail; siblings, Steven (Stephanie), Patricia (Steven) Lenard; sister in law, Gina.
Memorial Visitation will be held at Bobcean Funeral Home - Flat Rock Chapel, on Thursday, October 19, 2023 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Time of Prayer will be held at 4 pm Thursday, and a Time of Sharing will commence at 6:30 pm Thursday. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Roch Catholic Church on Friday, October 20, 2023 at 10:30 am. Father Ray Lewandowski will officiate the Mass.
