Leonard Dale Miller was born in Empress, Alberta on October 31, 1955. He spent his early years there until 1969, when his family moved to Calgary. He was 14 years old.
While living in Calgary, Dale developed a lifelong love of hockey, playing both as a teen and into adulthood. His friends and teammates fondly nicknamed him Crazy Legs. Hockey was a major part of his life, but so was baseball. He coached and later became an umpire, and was active in his community-often found at the local community centre.
Dale's love of all sports never faded. He could often be found watching games on television, especially during the Stanley Cup playoffs-his favourite time of year.
Beyond sports, Dale was a voracious reader who enjoyed everything from romance novels to murder mysteries, and everything in between. His passion for reading made him a true font of knowledge-always ready with a random fact or story to share.
After leaving high school, Dale worked at a variety of jobs before deciding to further his education. He earned his sheet metal ticket from a trade school in Calgary and, after moving to Spokane, Washington in the mid-1990s, also obtained his gas-fitting ticket.
Given Dale's appetite, it's no surprise his first job was at Dad's Cookies. He saved up enough money to buy his first car-a Morris Mini Minor.
Dale was married twice before meeting the love of his life, Sue, whom he married in 2002. Together, they shared a loving and happy marriage until his passing. From a previous marriage, Dale had a son and a daughter.
In 2009, Dale and Sue moved to New Castle, Pennsylvania, where he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Dale had a big heart-he rescued several dogs over the years and even adopted a cat, despite being allergic to them.
Proud of being a Halloween baby, Dale celebrated his birthday with joy and humour. In his younger years, he enjoyed dressing up and attending Halloween parties with friends. Later, he loved sitting outside with his favourite beverage, handing out candy to trick-or-treaters and jokingly asking them for treats since it was his birthday.
At the end of the day, Dale had his own sense of right and wrong, with very few shades of grey. He was a sensitive person, which is one of the many reasons we will miss him.
Dale will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Sue; stepdaughter Misty (David) Ryhal and their children, Caleb and Logan; son, Scott Miller and grandsons, Riker and Tristan; and daughter, Jessica Miller and grandson, Aiden.
He is also survived by his mother, Jean Miller; sisters, Deb (Ken) Miller, Fay Hartt, and Monica (Edward) Tkachuk; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
He was predeceased by his father, Leonard Miller; sister, Peggy Lee Miller; and brother-in-law, Gordon Hartt.
Goodbye son, husband, father, brother, papa, and friend.
Forever missed, forever remembered.
In keeping with his wishes, there are no services. Arrangements have been entrusted to Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 941 S. Mill St. New Castle, PA.
