Retired U.S. Postal Service Letter Carrier
TEWKSBURY: Leonard E. Toombs, Jr., age 77, a resident of Tewksbury for 48 years, passed away at home in the care of his family and hospice on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
He was the beloved husband of Mary E. (MacMullin) Toombs, with whom he celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on September 25, 2024.
Born in Watertown on November 16, 1946, he was the son of the late Leonard E. Toombs and the late Anna (Donovan) Toombs.
Lenny was raised in Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School in 1964.
In 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served during the Vietnam War. He was awarded several decorations for his active-duty service including the National Defense Service medal, the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal with one star, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with clasp, the Purple Heart Award with one star and the Marksman Badge (Rifle).
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a letter carrier by the U.S. Postal Service in Tewksbury, where he worked for 30 years.
He was a longtime member of the Tewksbury V.F.W. Post 8164 and was a former member of the Wilmington Knights of Columbus.
In his spare time, he enjoyed coin collecting, a hobby he began during his youth.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children: his daughter, Amy M. Capistran and her husband Brian, of Tewksbury, and his son, Matthew L. Toombs and his wife Courtney, of Tewksbury: four grandchildren, Collin J. and Brynn M. Capistran, and Brady J. and Madelyn G. Toombs. Lenny was the brother of Peter Toombs and his wife Lois, of Framingham, Janet Stephens and her late husband Frank, of Alpharetta, GA, the late Daniel Toombs and his late wife Georgia, and the late Connie O'Brien and her late husband Leo. He leaves many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Calling hours are Sunday, October 27th, from 2-5 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee Street, Tewksbury. His funeral procession will begin on Monday, October 28th at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. William's Church, 1351 Main Street, Route 38, Tewksbury. Services will conclude with interment at St. Mary cemetery, 90 River Road, Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Clear Path For Veterans New England, 84 Antietam Street, Devens, MA 01434 or online at www.clearpathne.org
