Lew Walter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cargain Funeral Homes Inc. - Carmel on Jan. 5, 2024.
Lew Henry Walter (Bud) passed away on January 4, 2024 at Weill Cornell Hospital at the age of 76 from pneumonia.
Lew was born March 4, 1947 in New York City, New York, the son of Lew Walter and Dorothy Zerrenner Walter.
Lew and family moved to Carmel, NY in 1953, where he graduated from Carmel High School, Ohio Wesleyan University and Harvard Business School.
Before Lew attended graduate school, he had a stint in the Navy as a supply officer on the destroyer USS Hamner during the Vietnam War. He was very proud of his Navy service and had a photo of the ship on which he served in his apartment.
Lew received his MBA from Harvard in 1973. Upon graduation, he joined Arthur Young and Co., a firm of CPA's. Lew left for a job in finance at Pepsi where he was the Comptroller of their European operations.
After returning to the US, Lew worked for RKO and Squibb and then moved on to Johnson & Higgins where his title was Controller. He retired from Marsh McClellan in June 2001.
Lew had an artistic eye. While living in London he fell in love with British antique furniture (mostly Georgian) and British Victorian watercolors, which were in his NYC apartment.
Lew was an avid games player. While he enjoyed tennis, baseball, and games such as trivial pursuits (which showcased his command of a variety of topics), he was an excellent card player. Although he played all kinds of card games, duplicate bridge was a passion. One comment that appealed to him was a comment by a world famous professional player that Lew was the best non-professional bridge player that he (the pro) was aware of. Since COVID, he played bridge online most days with Richard Weissman, a dear friend.
Lew loved following the antics of the stock market and enjoyed his forays as an investor. Last, but not least, he became a very good cook.
Surviving him is his sister, Carole Maeder, niece Kirsten Terry, her husband Dan Terry and their sons Alex and Curtis, his nephew Travis Maeder, his wife Trish Maeder, their son Mason and their daughters Mikayla and Cierra.
Lew loved and cherished his family. His friends will miss his wit, and his kindness. One of his defining characteristics was that he was a superb listener.
A Funeral Service to honor and celebrate Lew Henry Walter's life will take place 10:00 a.m., on Monday, January 8, 2024 at Cargain Funeral Homes Inc., 10 Fowler Avenue Carmel, NY.
Following the service, Lew will be escorted to his final resting place at Raymond Hill Cemetery, 165 NY-52, Carmel, NY with U.S. Navy Honors.

I was a neighbor of Lew. A few years ago we met often in the gym downstairs; he was indeed a kind and generous soul who served on our building“s board. We shared a love of tennis and he was a delightful man to talk to. I had run into him and knew he had been ill but have just found out he passed away. My condolences to his loved ones.

I thought of Lew today because we shared a birthday. I looked him up and found out about his passing. I worked very closely with Lew for many years at J&H. He hired me. I am so sad to hear of his passing. My deepest sympathies to all his family and friends.

Lew and I met at Navy Supply Corps School in 1969. We both served as Supply Officers on Gearing class destroyers in San Diego and Viet Nam. (Mine was the Richardson B Anderson DD-786, very similar to the Hamner.) Later we were roommates at HBS where we played a lot of bridge together. Lew was WAY, WAY better!

He was loved by everyone who ever met him. I will cherish his memory.

My sympathies to all the family.

Dear Carole, so very sorry to hear of Lews passing. After graduation, I worked as Mr. Dawson's secretary at CHS. Lew was always such a gentleman and bright young man. He always had an infectious smile and was very respectful of others and his surroundings. Enjoyed having him stop in office. Sending love and hugs to you and family.
