Lon B. Martin, a respected member of the community, passed away unexpectedly on January 22, 2024 at Oconee Memorial Hospital in the arms of his loving wife, Lu Anne. He was born on February 5, 1949 in Anderson, South Carolina to John Allen Martin and Isabel Bolt Martin.
A dedicated individual, Lon dedicated 31 years of his life to Clemson University, where he served as a maintenance supervisor of the Experimental Forest. His commitment to his work was unwavering, and he retired with honor from this esteemed institution. He went on to get his realtors license and started his own business, Lo Jo Builders.
Lon's passion for building extended beyond his career. He had a natural talent for construction and took great pride in creating beautiful structures. His meticulous attention to detail was evident in every project he undertook.
Outside of work, Lon found joy in various hobbies. He indulged in yardwork and gardening, deriving immense satisfaction from nurturing nature's beauty. His green thumb was particularly evident in his collection of caladiums, which he lovingly cultivated. At one time, he had a hobby of buying old garden tillers and rebuilding them.
But it wasn't just his love for nature that defined him; Lon's outgoing personality drew him to people. He cherished spending time with friends and family, always making sure that everyone felt heard and appreciated. This inherent warmth endeared him to all who knew him.
Lon attended Carlisle Military Academy, graduated from Daniel High School, and attended Anderson College. He valued learning and embraced it as a lifelong pursuit. His thirst for knowledge led him to excel in multiple facets of life.
Lon's commitment to family was unwavering throughout his life. He is survived by his beloved wife Lu Anne Hyatt Martin of Seneca, who stood by him through thick and thin. Their bond served as a beacon of love and support to all who witnessed it.
In addition to his wife, Lu Anne, Lon leaves behind a daughter, Betsy Martin of Marietta, GA as well as a brother, John Allen Martin III (Beverly), residing in Newnan, GA. He also has a number of special nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Lon was preceded in death by his parents John Allen Martin and Isabel Bolt Martin, as well as his sister Queenie Campbell. Though they have departed from this world before him, their memory lives on alongside Lon.
While mourned by those whose lives he touched, Lon leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and a kind heart. He will forever be remembered for his contributions to the field of construction, his love for his family, and the joy he found in the simple pleasures of life.
A Memorial Service will be held on January 27, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church located at 310 Church St, Central, SC 29630. Following the service, a visitation will take place downstairs at the same location. All are welcome to pay their respects and join in celebrating Lon's life.
Lu Anne would like to say a special thank you to all of Lon’s health care workers over the past few years, especially Stephanie, Charissa, and Nora at Prisma Health Oconee Memorial Hospital in the hours of his death.
In honoring Lon's memory, let us remember his kind-heartedness and unwavering spirit. May we cherish the time we had with him and strive to emulate his love for family and community. Lon B. Martin's legacy will continue to inspire us all.
