Lorin D. Johnson, age 79, of
Marysville, Ohio, formerly of Hilliard, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 11, 2025, following a recent battle with his health. He was one of the most selfless men you could ever meet, as he devoted his life to helping others and living out his faith through service, kindness, and humility.
Lorin was born in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, on September 12, 1946, one of two sons of the late Carl Evald Johnson and Doris Elleanor (Erickson) Johnson. A 1964 graduate of West Branch High School in Morrisdale, Pennsylvania, Lorin's faith journey began early through his involvement with the Good News Club who met after school, where he first embraced his belief in Jesus Christ.
Shortly after graduation, Lorin enlisted in the United States Army, where he attended the U.S. Army School of Music in Virginia Beach, where he honed his skills as a drummer. Stationed primarily at Fort Meade, Maryland, he proudly served his country from 1964 to 1967 during the Vietnam War. His company would play in parades or anywhere the US Army felt they could lift the spirits of others. Even during his service, Lorin's compassion shone-he volunteered in local hospitals, sparking his lifelong commitment to caring for others.
Shortly before his honorable discharge, Lorin was set up on a blind date with a nursing student named Erma Jean Kleinsorgen-a meeting that led to a lifetime of love and partnership. The two married on May 31, 1969, in Ontario, Ohio, and shared 56 beautiful years together, side by side in everything they did. They lovingly raised three children: Carl, Michael, and Krista.
Lorin's career path reflected his steadfast work ethic and servant's heart. After working in several different fields, Lorin found his calling at EJ Thomas Co. There, he became a trusted advisor and top salesman-driving over 1.5 million miles. His unwavering dedication to customer service, humility, and genuine care for others defined his more than 30-year career until his retirement in 2008. He and Erma lived in Hilliard during his time at the EJ Thomas Co., and they moved to Marysville one year before his retirement.
A man of deep and abiding faith, Lorin was a devoted and beloved member a men's Bible Study at the Cornerstone Global Methodist Church of Marysville. He also previously was a member at the Pharisburg United Methodist Church and Hilliard United Methodist Church, where he gave freely of his time and talents in numerous committees and ministries. His community involvement extended beyond the church-he was a proud member and past president of the Hilliard Kiwanis, a 15-gallon donor for the American Red Cross (most often through apheresis donations), and a supporter of Heifer International and countless other charitable organizations.
Lorin's life was defined by generosity. He detailed cars, painted homes, and baked bread not for personal profit, but to raise funds for various charitable organizations. His kitchen was often filled with the aroma of fresh-baked loaves destined for first responders, hospital staff, or anyone who could use a smile. Alongside Erma, Lorin lived out his calling to serve others with quiet grace and unyielding love.
Lorin found peace and joy in nature, especially in Two Harbors, Minnesota, where his parents built a home overlooking Lake Superior. There, he loved fishing, exploring, and sharing his favorite places like the Edna G. tugboat and Split Rock Lighthouse with his family. He cherished any time he got to spend there.
Those who knew Lorin will remember his warm, outgoing personality, his love for conversation, and his ability to make everyone feel valued. He had a calming presence that brought comfort to others and a heart that saw worth in every person-"whether you were a king or a ditch digger."
Lorin's legacy is one of faith, service, and unconditional kindness-a true reflection of a life well-lived and a heart well-loved.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Erma Johnson of
Marysville, OH; three children: Carl (Marilyn) Johnson of Rochester, NY, Michael (Jessica) Johnson of Hilliard, OH and Krista (Justin) Patterson of Clarkston, WA; four grandchildren: Nicholas Johnson, Christopher and Marie Johnson, and Penelope "Penny" Patterson; a brother, Robert Johnson of Lanse, PA; niece Beverly White; and several great nieces and nephews.
His family will greet friends from 2 – 4 pm on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Ingram & Snyder Funeral Home, 975 N. Maple St., Marysville. A celebration of life service will follow at 4 pm, with Pastor Nathan Custer officiating.
Burial will be observed privately in Oakdale Cemetery, where the Union County Honor Guard will perform military honors.
