Louise lived a life of love, laughter, and many fond moments with those she held dear to her heart. During childhood, Louise enjoyed a particularly close relationship with her German immigrant grandparents, who fostered in her a lifelong love of spending time in both the kitchen and the garden. She was proud of her German heritage and enjoyed keeping the traditions from her childhood alive for her family.
After graduating from Amundson High School, Louise earned her Master's Degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a Specialty in Blood Banking in 1971. Employed at Illinois Masonic Medical Center for over 40 years, she was an active member of the American Association of Blood Banking, serving as president of the IABB from 1997 to 1998. In her years at Illinois Masonic, Louise formed many special relationships that were often more like family than friends.
On September 4, 1971, Louise married Philip Mastrianno at St. Benedict. Because of her deep love of North Center, she and Phil purchased a home on Belle Plaine Ave. It was there that friends and neighbors became family. Her kitchen was as open as her heart, always ready to serve just what was needed - a hot cup of coffee or a glass of wine, a home-cooked meal or fresh-baked dessert, but most often a listening ear and pragmatic advice.
Louise was a devoted mother to her only child, Anna, taking great joy in creating and maintaining many traditions, particularly around the holidays. One favorite pastime was Sunday trips to Lincoln Park Zoo, a tradition started by Nanny and Grandpa Hodek. One of her greatest parenting joys was gaining a son when Anna married Steve.
The later years of Louise's life were spent in
Moline, IL, close to her children and grandchildren, where she continued to enjoy flower arranging, holiday crafts, collecting house plants, and trips to Wallace's Garden Center. Her favorite role in life was becoming a proud Omi to Elliot and Mark. Louise finished her journey at Overlook Village, where many caregivers became family. Above all, Louise valued relationships and created family wherever she went. She will be deeply missed, and her legacy will be remembered by all who knew her.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Philip, daughter and son-in-law, Anna & Steve Schott, Moline; brothers George Ulrich and Ken (Chris) Ulrich; grandchildren; Mark and Elliot; niece, Vicky and nephews, Matt and Andy (Beth). She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
