Lucinda "Lucy" Alice Barrett Boone
Sykesville, Maryland
Lucinda "Lucy" Alice Barrett Boone of Sykesville, Maryland, passed away on March 30, 2025, at the age of 83.
Lucy was born in Winsted, Connecticut, in June of 1941. She graduated from The Gilbert School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology from the University of Connecticut, where she discovered a deep passion for genetics. She went on to complete a master's degree in biology at the University of Kansas and earned a PhD from the Department of Animal Services at the University of Maryland, followed by a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Hematology.
Lucy had a distinguished career. She conducted pioneering research for the USDA and worked for many years as a Cytogeneticist at the Kennedy Krieger Institute at Johns Hopkins University.
An accomplished equestrian, Lucy rode horses throughout her life. She was a well-known figure in Connecticut horse shows, collecting many blue ribbons. After moving to Maryland, she bred, trained, and competed with Quarter Horses, even winning a championship in reining competitions. Her love for animals extended beyond horses-she always had beloved dogs, cats, and even two donkeys.
Lucy is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Jim Boone; her cherished stepdaughters, Vanessa Lichliter and Lori Johnson; and her grandchildren, Kristin and Mason Lichliter, and James and Dale Johnson and many great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister, Mary Barrett of St. Louis, Missouri, and brothers William Barrett of New York City, John Barrett of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and Jim Barrett of Winsted, Connecticut. She was predeceased by her sisters, Catherine "Kate" Barrett and Eileen Barrett.
In retirement, Lucy enjoyed painting, photography, daily walks at Piney Run State Park, and staying active with regular workouts.
Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial at her home on May 25th. Light refreshments will be served.
