Lucy Stephenson Drudy, known lovingly to many as "Lucy," passed away peacefully on July 11, 2024, in Wilmington, NC. Born on October 22, 1929, in Duncan, NC, Lucy lived a remarkable 94 years filled with adventure, compassion, and dedication.
Lucy began her career with Eastern Airlines in Raleigh, NC, and concluded her professional journey with the company in Atlanta, GA. Starting as a ticket agent, she rose through the ranks to work in Baggage Claim, where she was renowned for her tireless efforts in reuniting lost baggage with its rightful owners. Her tenure at Eastern Airlines afforded her the incredible opportunity to travel the world-a privilege she never ceased to be grateful for, always marveling how a farm girl from Duncan, NC, could experience such global adventures.
Lucy had a profound love for animals, which was evident in her care for her pets. At one point, she lovingly looked after 27 cats and 4 dogs, ensuring they received the best care possible. In her final moments, she found comfort in holding an Eastern Airlines toy airplane replica in one hand and hugging her stuffed cat, Lucy Junior, in the other.
In her later years, Lucy resided at Trinity Grove Nursing Home in Wilmington, NC, where she received exceptional care that mirrored the love and attention she had always given her animals.
Lucy's personal life included two marriages. The first did not endure, but her second marriage to Tom Drudy, an Army Vietnam Veteran, brought her happiness until his untimely death from cancer. Lucy demonstrated immense strength and love as she cared for Tom during his illness.
Preceded in death by her parents, John Wade Stephenson and Mary Lula Avent Stephenson, her beloved Uncle Hal Stephenson, and her sisters, Agnes Stephenson Phillips and Hazel Stephenson Edgerton, Lucy leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience. She is survived by three nephews and two nieces, who will carry forward her memory.
No services are planned at this time.
Lucy lived life on her own terms. Whether or not one agreed with her choices, it was impossible not to admire the incredible journey of a farm girl from Duncan, NC, who built a career, traveled the world, and shared her love generously. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
