Lyle Cook, 88 of Coopers Plains, New York, passed away at his home on Friday, May 31, 2024 with his family at his side.
Lyle attended school in Presho and Painted Post High School. He received his GED while serving in the US Army. He was drafted into the service in 1958 until 1961.
He began his life from the age of 16 working in the automobile business for GMC. He was employed by dealerships in the Corning/Elmira area for over 50 years. Plus, many of his customers brought their vehicles to be repaired to him at his home.
Lyle retired in 2002 with golfing on his mind. He played his last 9 holes a week before his passing at Indian Hills Golf Course. He was a member of the Coopers Plains United Methodist Church for over 30 years and served as a part-time custodian and a trustee for 21 of those years. He later became a member of the North Baptist Church.
Lyle and Sandra celebrated 62 years of marriage in April of this year. They were foster parents for 47 years serving and loving children of Chemung and Steuben Counties; retiring in 2022.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra, daughter, Suzanne (Hank) Windows of Addison, Tamela (Dean) Campbell of Florida, sons, L. Scott Cook and James Weishar of Coopers Plains, and Robert (Jean Hodges) Cook of Iowa, best friend and brother-in-law, Robert Johns of Painted Post, brothers, Gary Cramer of Lawrenceville, Donald Cramer of Lindley and Joseph Van Zile of Ithaca. Many nieces and nephews loved and survived by him. Lyle was predeceased by his sister, Rose Burchler, his mother, Iola Cramer, his father, George Cook, stepfather Delos Cramer, brothers, George Jr., William Cook, and George Cramer, mother-in-law, Susan Benson, father-in-law, Howard Benson, sister-in-law, Marjorie Johns.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Phillips Funeral Home, 17 West Pulteney Street on Thursday, June 6, 2024 from 10:30 am to 12:30pm. A celebration of Lyle's life will follow there at 12:30pm. Burial and military honors will take place at Bath National Cemetery at 2:00 pm. Pastor Rev. Neil Coe will conduct the services.
Reception and Celebration of Life at the Coopers Plains Community Church following the services at the VA.
