Madeline Carole Daniels, daughter of John B. and Dorothy C. Stewart, died peacefully at her Davis Shores home on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
Madeline, known to most as "Carole," was a native of St. Augustine like her parents John and Dorothy. Carole enjoyed sharing stories of her childhood adventures in the downtown area of St. Augustine with friends and family. A lifelong member of the Cathedral Basilica Parish, Carole was educated by the Sisters of St. Joseph, and graduated high school with the St. Joseph Academy class of 1957. Carole kept up close contact over the years with many of her high school friends. After high school, Carole went to work at the Exchange Bank where she met her husband of 61 years, John W. Daniels. The two were wed on October 8, 1960.
Carole excelled in art, especially drawing and pastels, and would eventually share her talents with children as a teacher's aide at both Crookshank and then at R.B. Hunt Elementary Schools. Indeed, Carole had a knack for bringing out the best of a child's artistic imagination and talent. She also enjoyed listening to good music. Her three children were practically raised on a "soundtrack" that included Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Peter-Paul-&-Mary, the Fifth Dimension, Simon & Garfunkel, and Janice Joplin. In her last decades, Carole was a big fan of Mark Knopfler, traveling often across the country to attend Knopfler's concerts. She also enjoyed thoughtful discourse and good literature, especially Robertson Davies.
After retiring from the school system, Carole became a regular at a local gym for more than 20 years. Her impressive physique earned her the nickname "Trinity" by everyone in her family based on the character of the same name in the Matrix movies.
She is survived by her three children, Alison (Bruce) Butler, Liz (Bill) Lawson, and John "Jack" (Marcia Patterson) Daniels, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be held at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, July 16, 2025, 9:00 AM. Interment of ashes of both Carole and John Daniels to follow immediately after Mass at San Lorenzo Cemetery.
