Date of Death: November 17, 2021
Date of Birth: August 21, 1935
Margaret (Peggy) Vallerand,86, of Greene passed away at home on November 17, 2021 after a long illness. Peggy was born August 21,1935 to John P and Margaret Martin Toomey. She was raised in Lewiston and New Auburn, graduating from Edward Little High School in 1953. She then attended Mercy School of Nursing in Portland and became a registered nurse in 1956. A lifelong learner, she completed her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maine Farmington in 1991.
She married Alphonse William (Bill) Vallerand in 1957. They made their home in Greene at Glenrock Spring, where they raised their six children, Carolyn, John, Peter, Theresa, Mary Lou, and Christine.
In addition to raising her children and working with Bill at Glenrock, Peg worked at both area hospitals. Much of her career was working in the Emergency Department at St Mary's in Lewiston. She eventually retired from nursing, though she never really retired as she was still helping with paperwork at Glenrock Spring as recently as the beginning of November, as she had done for the last 64 years with Bill and then their son John after Bill's death in 2007.
Peg loved playing cards, especially cribbage. She also enjoyed going for long rides to nowhere. Family game nights included Trivial Pursuit and many different card games. She was extremely competitive and passed that trait on to her children. An accomplished knitter she enjoyed making sweaters for family, especially her great grandchildren. She enjoyed her monthly lunches with "the crew" from St Mary's and was happy to have seen them in October.
She was a seasoned traveler, often visiting her far flung family all over the United States and traveling with her sister to Ireland and Mexico. She and Bill also traveled to St Croix and St Maarten with her St Mary's crew where they enjoyed all the islands had to offer. Peggy was game for anything and was equally at home in a 4-star resort in the Caribbean or a tent in the Maine woods. She loved her Black Lab, Nala, and often took her to remote beaches so Nala could swim and catch tennis balls.
She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Tucker and son John Vallerand of Greene, her daughter and son in law Theresa and Chris Miller of Alamogordo New Mexico and her daughter Christine Vallerand also of Greene, her grandchildren Rhiannon Keller and her husband Matt Garfinkle, Owen Tucker and Dylan Tucker, Sharmane Vallerand-Barter and her husband Warren Barter, Vincent Vallerand and partner Sarah Kyllonen, Rebekah Vallerand and Benjamin Vallerand and his fiancée Caitlyn Bublak and seven great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister Leonora Ryan of Worcester MA, brother John Toomey of Ann Arbor MI, and sister Ellen F Toomey of Harpswell and many nieces and nephews.
Peg was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Alphonse William Vallerand, her daughter Mary Lou Vallerand Powers and her son Peter O Vallerand.
Her family would like to thank the kind folks at Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice for their loving care of our mother, especially nurses Christina and Lisa and home health aides Irene and Barbara. Peg really enjoyed your visits.
There will be a private inurnment at Valley Cemetery in Greene and then a public Celebration of Life in the spring.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Peg's memory be made to Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice or The Dempsey Center.
