Maria Isabel Hames, age 37, passed away suddenly on March 8, 2023. Loving wife of Chris Hames, and cherished mother of Sofia and Isabel. Beloved daughter of Consuelo Ramirez Sanchez and the late Francisco Ruiz Cuervo, and daughter-in-law of Robert and Karen Hames. Dearest sister of Felipe Ruiz Ramirez and sister-in-law of Jenny Hames. Granddaughter of Maria Candelaria Sanchez. Proud Godmother of Matthew Homan. Maria was a fond niece, cousin, and dear friend of many.
Maria was born on April 20, 1985 in Villavicencio, Colombia. She came to the United States at the age of 14 without knowing any English and without anything to her name. Maria overcame this adversity through her persistence, willpower, and resilient spirit, along with the support of her Ruiz family and dear friends she met along the way. She attended college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and she went on to become a certified public accountant (CPA) specializing in tax. Maria met her husband Chris when they both worked as CPAs at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Chicago. They built their life together in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. While always proud of her Colombian roots and culture, Maria was proud to become a citizen of the United States in May 2012. Soon after, Maria sponsored her mom Consuelo so she could come to the United States, and she supported her in everything during her transition to this country. Maria's journey was the pure representation of the American dream.
Maria and Chris married on May 23, 2014. They were each other's best friends, and although their personalities could be different at times, they came together to form a perfect team. They welcomed their daughter Sofia to the world in 2016, followed by their daughter Isabel in 2018. Being a mother was her greatest pride, and her two daughters were the absolute light of her life. Nothing brought her more joy than to see her children happy and thriving. Maria and her family moved to Elmhurst, IL to put down roots, and it was there that she began some small business ventures and assistant teaching at the preschool her daughters attended, while also being a full-time mom.
Maria was a wonderful daughter, and her mother saw her as a true inspiration for herself and others. She was a treasure in the eyes of her mother and brother, and Maria was deeply admired by both for her perseverance in her accomplishments, for her fighting spirit, and for her beautiful family.
Those who knew Maria knew her as a bright light who brought fun and positive energy to a conversation. She was full of love to give to everyone she met, and those around her could feel that love. She sought to ensure those she talked to felt understood and she was genuinely interested in connecting with others and learning people's life stories. Maria was the kind of friend who made you feel loved, cared for, seen, and understood. She was the type of person you could laugh with (and her laugh was wonderful), cry with, vent to, or just have fun with. She was thoughtful and profoundly caring, and she was intentional about checking in with people and telling them how much she appreciated them. Whether it was with a phone call or sending a heartwarming gift, Maria did even the smallest things with great love.
Maria will always live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, March 15, 2023 from 3:00-8:00pm at Elmhurst Community Funeral Home - The Ahlgrim Chapel (567 South Spring Road; Elmhurst, IL 60126). Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 10:00AM at Visitation Catholic Church (779 S. York St.; Elmhurst, IL 60126). Interment private. Face masks are required at all events. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the following causes that were close to Maria's heart: the National Alliance on Mental Illness (nami.org) or the Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network (elmhurstwalkin.org/donors).

I was so privileged to know Maria and be a witness to the profound love she had for her girls, family, and friends. She and I were partners and embarked on a small business adventure that was near and dear to our hearts. We quickly connected over shared values and ideas for big dreams during such a special time in our lives...balancing a growing small business while growing our own families. Maria was so warm and inviting and I could feel that radiate from her every time we´d get together. I will always remember when she welcomed our team into her home, cooked an incredible meal and created a space for connecting with one another. I was in awe as she did all of this after first sweetly singing her daughter, Sofia to sleep in the other room. That evening I witnessed her move so gracefully from mom to hostess to us to business owner. She is an inspiration that I know will live on through the many lives she has touched. My deepest condolences to her family and friends. I will always continue to pray for your comfort and peace.

Chris, Sophia and Isabel - I want to express my deepest sympathies for the loss of your beloved wife and mother, Maria. I pray that you will be able to cherish and take comfort in the wonderful memories you were all able to make together. She will always be with you.

While I did not know Maria well, from our few interactions together I knew immediately that she was a special person. She was always sincerely interested to talk to me, she was warm, she was kind and she was cheerful - all qualities that I know she passed along to her daughters. She was always there with a friendly wave or smile when our paths crossed. Maria was a shining light in this world and I have no doubt she will continue to shine on through you all.

Maria, you were a beautiful person inside and out. You always had such a warm and compassionate way with people and all of your neighbors. You will be missed dearly by all who knew you and had the pleasure of talking to. You were a wonderful person and a great mother. I keep picturing the times you would be walking with your girls who adored their mom. You always had time to smile and converse with others who came across your path. You will be missed and will always be loved by anyone that knew you and were graced by your presence. Rest easy, sweet Maria. Sending love and prayers to you and your family who have experienced this tremendous loss.

The sorrow we feel at the thought of you not being here, not seeing your beautiful smile, seeing you taking walks with Sophia and Isabel, hearing the laughter of you all in the pool, the care, concern for all on the street...your "village". The short stops to visit along your way, never seeming to be too busy for any of us. Every day is a memory in the making, thank you for the memories and God bless you for each memory. The "village" will be there for you Chris, Sophia and Isabel, in any way we can.

I'd like to send my deepest condolences from Australia. I didn't personally know Maria, but she was spoken of very highly by her brother Felipe. This is so hard to believe and I'm so sorry my dear friend. I´m so sorry you´re having to go through this. May her memories live on. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.

I was shocked to hear of Maria's sudden passing.  Regrettably, I didn't stay in touch with her much in the past couple years as I should have.  As I look back, I think most of the memories of Maria from University of Illinois.  I met her in an Econ 102 class freshman year, and she was one of the first friends I made in college.   While I didn't keep in touch with her much the past few years, I saw how happy she was being a mother to her two children when I saw photos online, received her Christmas cards, or texted. This loss must be truly heartbreaking for those closest to her.

Maria was one of the kindest and gentlest people I have ever known. When I worked with Maria last year, I was always struck by her ability to notice everything and make time for everyone with unfailing grace and respect.

Maria's eyes would sparkle with joy speaking of her beloved daughters Sofia and Isabel, and shine with pride when she mentioned her husband Chris or her mother Conseula. She loved her family so very, very much.

I am heartbroken for the pain and loss of this beautiful daughter, wife, mother and friend. May the love of God which surpasses all understanding surround and hold up all who love her, just as it surely surrounds and embraces Maria, who touched so many with her great kindness, intelligence and thoughtful care.

I will be making a donation to NAMI in Maria's name. I know how much it would mean to my friend to continue to bring hope and healing in a hurting world.
