Marilyn Margaret Berning, 84, of Cuba City, WI, passed away Saturday, August 23, 2025 at home after a long battle with cancer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2025 at St. Rose of Lima Church, Cuba City, WI, with Rev. David Flanagan and Deacon Bill Bussan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 28 at Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cuba City, WI, where there will be a Parish Rosary Service at 2:45 p.m. Visitation will also be held Friday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service.
Marilyn was born on November 10, 1940 in Cuba City, WI, the daughter of Gerald and Elizabeth (Kieler) Van De Wiel. She graduated from Cuba City High School, followed by St. Joseph’s Mercy School of Nursing. She was united in marriage to Gerald Berning on June 16, 1962 at St. Rose of Lima Church in Cuba City.
Marilyn worked as a registered nurse in Cuba City and Hudson, WI, for over 30 years. She was a faithful member of St. Rose of Lima Parish and the Catholic Daughters of America. Marilyn enjoyed volunteering, playing cards and mahjong, gardening, and golfing. She also enjoyed quilting and was a member of the Dubuque Cable Car Quilt Guild. Marilyn enjoyed hosting several Rotary exchange students through the years, and she loved visiting with her friends. Above all, Marilyn’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Gerald Berning, Cuba City, WI; four children, Brad (Suzanne) Berning, Marshall, TX, Bart (Michelle) Berning, Anacortes, WA, Beth (Paul) Keddy, Grand Junction, CO, and Bridget Berning, Madison, WI; six grandchildren, Sophia (Justin Krantz) Berning, Chloe (Caleb) Sherrod, Clara and Isaac Keddy, James Berning and William Berning; three great-grandchildren, Scarlett Berning, and Bradley and Wren Sherrod; seven siblings, Rita (Tom) Wedig, Belmont, WI, John (Ann) Van De Wiel, Cuba City, Jerri Schardt, Belvidere, IL, Joan (Bob) Ramaker, Cuba City, Steve (Carolyn) Van De Wiel, Platteville, WI, Ruth Ann (Tim) Ausloos, Fond du Lac, WI and Elizabeth Van De Wiel, Madison, WI; Jerry’s siblings, Mary Ann (Gene) Wessling, Omaha, NE, Doug Hilby, Dubuque, IA, Mary Berning, Sinsinawa, WI, Joyce (Ron) Lansing, Luxemburg, IA, Lloyd (Janet) Berning, Sinsinawa, WI, John (Ellen) Berning, Menominee, IL, and Mark (Jane) Berning, Dubuque, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, David; and in-laws, Eldon Schardt, Bernadette Hilby, Richard Berning, Clarence (Judy) Berning and Jenelle Berning.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Marilyn’s name may be sent to Hodan Community Services in Mineral Point, WI, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Heart Work Camp Group, or St. Rose of Lima Mission to Jamaica. Memorials in Marilyn’s name may also be sent to Casey-McNett Funeral Home at 123 N. Jackson St., Cuba City, WI 53807.
