Mark E. Joos, 63, of Highland Lakes, passed away tragically on Saturday, March 29, 2025, while doing what he loved most-fishing on Lake Wanda surrounded by the beauty of his beloved Highland Lakes community.
Born in Paterson and raised in Lincoln Park with his four siblings, Mark found his true home in Highland Lakes when his family moved there during his teenage years. It was a place where he could indulge his passion for the outdoors-hunting, fishing, and soaking in the peace of the natural world.
Mark met the love of his life, Lisa Cannizzaro, when they were young. Their bond was instant and unbreakable, and he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, but was only allowed to propose after she graduated college. Their love story was marked by deep devotion, laughter, and unwavering support for each other as they lived their days in their homemade paradise.
After attending Sussex Tech High School, Mark enlisted in the Army, completing basic training in Kentucky before being stationed in Germany, where he served with dedication working on the manuals for A1 Abrams Tanks in the motor pool. Returning home, Mark channeled his work ethic and skill into a successful career in maintenance, eventually becoming a Master Plumber-a title he wore with pride.
Mark's greatest accomplishment was his family. Together, he and Lisa made their home in Highland Lakes, where they raised their son, Ryan. Mark was a hands-on father who cherished every moment spent teaching Ryan how to fish, hunt, and appreciate the natural world. His joy was never greater than when he could share his knowledge and passion, not just with Ryan but with other children in the community. Mark was a patient mentor and a constant source of encouragement.
He was also a dedicated volunteer with the local Berkeley Bassmaster Tournaments and a tireless advocate for responsible, ethical hunting and fishing. Mark's deep respect for nature was something he eagerly shared with everyone around him, inspiring others to appreciate and care for the environment.
Highland Lakes wasn't just Mark's community-it was his extended family. His generosity and willingness to help wherever he could made him a beloved figure. Whether it was lending a hand at a local event or simply showing up for someone in need, Mark's kindness left a lasting mark.
To those who knew and loved him, Mark was a man of integrity and compassion, someone who valued family above all else. His legacy of kindness, love, and dedication will endure through his son, Ryan and daughter-in-law Rebecca, and his two grandsons.
Mark is lovingly survived by Ryan and Rebecca; his grandson, Declan (and soon to be grandson, Caden); his sister, Kimmy; and many extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lisa; his parents, Kenneth and Nancy Joos; and his siblings, Susie, Randy and Eric.
All are welcome to visit with the family on Friday, April 4th from 9am - 12:30 pm at Scanlan's in Pompton Plains. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 12:30 pm to conclude the visitation period.
