Mark Vanderheyden Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Funeral Homes - Guisinger Chapel on Aug. 22, 2024.
Mark Vanderheyden passed away Saturday evening, August 17, 2024, peacefully at home after a long battle with Alzheimer's dementia. He grew up in South Bend, Indiana and graduated from Jackson High school Class of 1974 and then Western Kentucky University where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi. Here he met his wife, Laura Vanderheyden, and graduated in 1978 with a degree in Business.
Mark returned to South bend to work for his father in his family business; Vanderheyden Distributing, which later evolved into Vanderheyden Technologies.
He was able to spend over a decade working with his three sons both in the office and in the field. Mark would say, "You can't put a price tag on that". He deeply loved ALL of his family and was very proud of the friendships and relationships he was able to form throughout his life and truly valued them.
Mark was an avid runner, competing in many smaller races, marathons, and triathlons, including the 100th running of the Boston Marathon, Chicago marathon, and the Sunburst.
Mark also, through what his sons would describe as grueling forced marches across Colorado, New Mexico, Indiana, Michigan and other various locations would instill the love of nature and the outdoors in all its different forms.
Mark is survived by his wife Laura Vanderheyden (Sergent), his sons: Adam Vanderheyden, Brian (Angie) Vanderheyden, Kyle Vanderheyden, his two sisters: Kathy (Craig) Zwickl, Linda ( Bob ) Leidgen, his Uncle; Tom Vanderheyden, nieces and nephews, and 6 grandchildren: Anthony Vitale, Nolan Vanderheyden, Nash Vanderheyden, Joe McQuery, Elizabeth Vanderheyden, Samuel Vanderheyden and 1 great grandson; Vincent de Anthony Vitale.
Memorial visitation for Mark will be held from 5pm-7pm on Thursday August 29, 2024, at the Palmer Funeral Home, Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend. A memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday August 30, 2024, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.

I met Mark at Western Kentucky University. He was a great Pi Kappa Phi fraternity brother. He was one of the reasons I joined the chapter. He was always supportive. I was pleasantly surprised when he showed up here in Kentucky at my fall party a few years ago. I was very sorry to hear about his passing.

I knew Mark for only a short period while living with him and six other brothers in the frat's very first fraternity house at WKU. I remember him as a hard working student and stand-up mentor for the younger brothers. I'm very sorry for his family's loss and feel fortunate to have known Mark for the time we had.
