Marshall Hugh Hemmingsen, 80, of
Scottsdale, Arizona, passed away unexpectedly on December 30, 2024.
Marshall was born September 26, 1944, in Columbus, Ohio to parents Myron W. Hemmingsen and Isabel Mary (Johnson) Hemmingsen. The eldest of five children, Marshall grew up in Indiana and attended Whiteland High School, graduated from Southport High School, and attended Franklin College, where he played baseball. As a catcher, he tried out for the Cincinnati Reds Farm League against Johnny Bench. Marshall earned his pilot's license and was a private charter pilot as well as a flight instructor. He was a Veteran, serving as Airman First Class in the Air Force stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona through May 1971. Marshall married Brenda (Bobbie) Lynne Doggett and worked for the Hemmingsen family business, Central Indiana Supply Co (CISCO), from where he retired.
Post retirement, Marshall combined his love for children and driving and took what he referred to as his "favorite job ever," driving a school bus in Indianapolis. He went on to train bus drivers in the Perry Township School District where they created an award named after him for exemplary training, awarding it to him upon retirement.
Marshall spent most of his life in Indiana, but upon the birth of his grandson in Arizona, moved with his wife to Arizona to spend every moment possible with his grandson and family there. Marshall was a fun-loving Grampa and created what the family coined "The Fiddler's Club" due to his exuberant curiosity and hours of fun play and mischief with his grandson.
Among Marshall's many other loves in life were people, baseball, boating, and playing euchre and billiards. Marshall never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him. He coached his son and grandson's baseball teams throughout the years and had visited every MLB ballpark in the country; he owned several boats, spending much of his time in recent years in San Diego and Coronado, CA with family and friends. On the frequent drives between Arizona and California you would likely hear tunes out his window from the Moody Blues, Abba or specifically Frank Sinatra's "My Way".
Marshall's family was the most important part of his life, and he was extremely proud of his son, daughter-in-law, grandson, and his grandson's wife. He was overly generous to all with his time and resources and was always available to help others who needed it. Marshall was a long-time online attendee of Impact Church and Scottsdale Bible Church and his life exemplified Love in all that he did for others.
Marshall is survived by his wife, Brenda (Bobbie) Lynne Hemmingsen, son David Thomas Hemmingsen (Donna) and Grandson, Corwin Thomas Hemmingsen (Dominique), brothers, Gregory Hemmingsen (Pam), Matthew Hemmingsen, sisters, Holly Challis, and Mary Laetsch (Charles), and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family members. He was proceeded in death by his mother, father and a son, Bradley Scott Hemmingsen.
A private service for family is planned. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Scottsdale Christian Academy Baseball Program in his name and mailed to Scottsdale Christian Academy, 14400 N Tatum Blvd., Phoenix, AZ 85032.
