Martin John Golden was born October 13, 1947, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to William and Mary (Murray) Golden. After graduating high school, Marty joined the Army and served his country honorably in the Vietnam War. He learned cartography there, a skill he took with him when he returned home. He had a long career in mapmaking, including 25 years at National Geographic.
Marty was a proud Vietnam veteran and was often seen sporting his veteran ballcap. He never forgot the people who perished in the war. Like so many others who were exposed to Agent Orange, Marty dealt with many serious health issues throughout his life. He faced each adversity with humor, grit and determination to survive another day.
Marty fought hard to the end and passed away with his daughters by his side on June 5, 2025, in York, Pennsylvania, at age 77 after an extended terminal illness.
Marty is survived by his daughters, Staci Golden and Jill Golden; his son, Jason Golden (Jacque); his granddaughter, Braelynn Lawall; his grandsons, Alister Golden, Patric Golden and Jonathan Golden; his sister, Mary Catherine Delmar; his sister-in-law, Karen Golden; several nieces and nephews; and his Golden Retriever, Taffy. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, William "Billy" Golden; his brother-in-law, Jack Delmar; his nephew, John Delmar; and his Golden Retrievers, Allie, Riley and Shadow.
His burial with military honors will occur in private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund or the Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue.
