Mary Christina "Chris" Mower Butterfield was called home on the evening of October 20th 2025 at her home in Herriman. She was surrounded by family as she took her husband's hand and was finally reunited with him after 41 years apart. Chris was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah.to Gene Willis Mower and Elva Bernice Wall. She spent most of her childhood in Murray, where she attended Liberty Elementary School and then became a Murray Spartan. She was always proud of that, often talking about her teenage years.
She married DeWayne J. Butterfield on March 27, 1964. They lived in Murray for a short time and started their family. Then they ventured to Edmonton, Alberta Canada, but soon they returned to Herriman where mom made many lifelong friends, learned to can any kind of food they grew in their huge gardens, and found her place in the world. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings but her favorite was the Primary. She always has a special way with the kids.
In July 1971, their daughter Sandy was born. She completed our family of four. Mom loved to paint ceramics, and she was so good at it. Often making them look real including a beautiful nativity she painted for her mom. She loved to color, cross stitch, and cook for her family. Making the best roast and potatoes, cinnamon rolls and our family favorite, potato salad. She loved the mountains and fishing. Summers were spent mostly at Current Creek. You could always find her by the creek with her pole in the water patiently waiting for the next bite.
After her husband passed away, she went to work as a teacher at a preschool. She loved the kids and was proud to be called Miss Chris. She worked for Abbott Medical for a short time and then went to work at Walmart. She had just celebrated her 29th year there in September. She was proud of that as she should be. She was the best TOY LADY around! Often helping worried parents at Christmas time who needed that one specific toy. Even dropping some at their house on the way home from work when she found one. She made special friends at Walmart who love her and were so good to check on her through the years.
She loved being a mom and especially a grandma. She made birthdays and holidays so special for all of us creating traditions to last forever. These traditions continued to her grandchildren where they gained whole new momentum. LOL.
Her most important thing in life was her family and friends. She loved deeply and wanted all to know how much she cared about us.
Through all the challenges she faced through all the years, she always got back up and kept going with a smile. She was an example of courage, faith, endurance, strength, and love. Know how much we love you Mom and how proud of you we all are.
Survived by daughter Leah Church, 6 Grandkids, Ray and Paige Church, Shayla and Zack Olsen, Candace and Mike Dabb, Saydies and Dylan, Shunell and Zack Curtis, and Sage Griffith. 8 Great Grandkids, Brittlyn, Jack, Ledger, Harrison, Evelyn, Milo, Lyla, Ayzlee and Ryklee. Sister paty Carter, Brother and Sister in Law Gene and Tammy Butterfield, Sister in Laws, Diane Butterfield and Vickie Butterfield, and lots and lots of nieces and nephews and friends.
Preceded in death by parents, husband DeWayne, daughter Sandy, Son in Law Jeff and many more much loved family members.
