Mary Josephine Madden, 95 of Beverly, died on Monday, July 28th in her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Salem, she was the daughter to the late Francis B. and Mary J. (Hallisey) Madden.
Mary was a sister in the order of Notre Dame for over twenty-five years. She later taught science for several years in Seekonk, MA. A strong work ethic was a foundation in her life and at an age when most people were thinking about retirement, she worked in Ipswich at the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
Mary enjoyed traveling with her friend Barbara Wilson all over the United States, she loved seeing the differences in each state and bringing home souvenirs. It is said that she and Barbara visited 49 of the 50 states. Mary loved to send notes and cards to all her friends and family. She always remembered a birthday or holiday with a card and personal note. One of her favorite things to do was to sit on the back porch and look at all the flowers and read her newspaper. She was an avid reader in her younger years and that continued throughout her retirement.
Mary is survived by eleven nephews and nieces, Francis Madden, James Madden, Cathleen Hamilton, Patricia Madden, John Madden, Susan Madden, Ellen Dockery, Stephen Madden, Jane Lessard, Mary Madden and Elizabeth Madden; many great nephews and nieces; and countless friends.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by two brothers, Francis B. Madden and John N. Madden.
Funeral services for Mary are private.
