Mary Margaret Sexauer (nee Fisher), a longtime resident of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and a passionate art educator in the town's public schools, passed away at home on June 19, 2025, after a brief illness. She was 78.
Mary Margaret inspired thousands of students during her long and dedicated career as an Art teacher at Parker Middle School, McCarthy Middle School, and South Row Elementary School. An eternal optimist, she was known for her uplifting presence, practical wisdom, and a warm smile that could brighten any room - bringing comfort and reassurance to everyone around her. Her deep commitment to family was evident in the lovingly prepared meals that became her trademark, the time she devoted to her children and grandchildren, and her ever-present willingness to listen and offer thoughtful, compassionate guidance to anyone in need.
A military brat, Mary Margaret and her family settled in Chelmsford in 1960, where her family was among the first residents of the burgeoning Chelmsford Farms Estates. She and her siblings wreaked havoc upon the neighborhood for years until she left to attend Bethany College in West Virginia, earning a bachelor's degree in Art. A lifelong lover of fine art, she found great joy in traveling the world to see masterpieces in person.
She is survived by her husband, Pete Sexauer; her son, Matt Sexauer, and his wife, Kate; her daughter, Elizabeth Sexauer, and her husband, Matt Putnam. All continue her legacy as devoted educators, inspiring the next generation with a love of learning. Mary Margaret also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren - Abbey, Nora, Lucy, and Jack - who adored her as deeply as she adored them. She is also survived by her sister, Anne Egan of Chelmsford, and her brother, Richard Fisher of Riverside, California. Mary Margaret was preceded in death by her infant son, Paul, and her parents, Lucille and Jack Fisher. The family would like to express their gratitude to their cousin, Dr. Amy Sexauer, for her love, guidance, and support.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Cannonball Kids' cancer Foundation (cannonballkidscancer.org) and/or the Mockingbird Foundation in support of music education (mbird.org). Mary Margaret would also want you to take a road trip, see some art, discover something new, and celebrate life.
Services and interment will be held privately.
