Marylin Jane Oakey Neubert peacefully returned to her heavenly home and into the arms of her beloved "Bud" on Sunday, September 14, 2025, in Provo, Utah, at the remarkable age of 94. She was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by everyone who knew her.
Marylin was born on February 11, 1931, in Ogden, Utah, to Russell David Oakey and Jane Elizabeth Clarke. When Marylin was three, her parents divorced, and her mother later married Joy William Naylor, whom Marylin dearly loved and who raised her as his precious daughter. She was raised with two brothers, Russell William Oakey and Charles Joy Naylor, and a younger sister, Carolin Joyce Naylor Larsen. Marylin shared a particularly special bond with her sister, Carolin, with whom she maintained a deep and abiding lifelong friendship.
As a young child, Marylin's hair was initially blonde, gradually deepening to the auburn shade that became a distinctive feature throughout her life. As a child, she won several dancing and singing competitions on stage and on the radio, showcasing her early talents. Her childhood years were filled with cherished friendships, movies, bicycles, "road shows," and roller skates-a testament to her vibrant social spirit.
Marylin attended Madison Elementary School, Riverdale Junior High School, and Weber High School. After graduating, she pursued her education at Weber College, earning an Associate of Science degree. She then continued her studies at Brigham Young University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis on vocal performance. Marylin possessed an undeniable passion for music, embracing dancing, playing the piano, and especially singing-whether in chorus groups or in lead roles in musicals and operas at Weber College and Brigham Young University.
In October of 1952, Marylin met the love of her life, Harvey LaMon "Bud" Neubert from Graeagle, California. Their courtship lasted a year, and following a six-week engagement, they were married on December 17, 1953, in the Salt Lake Temple. With his wavy blond hair, smooth trumpet solos, beautiful tenor voice, and his dedication to the Gospel of Jesus Christ (further enhanced by his service as a returned missionary from Sweden), Marylin truly believed Bud was the most handsome and amazing man on earth. Bud and Marylin shared an inseparable bond, finding joy in every moment together-whether studying, singing, dancing, or traveling to visit family.
Marylin was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Bud, and her four siblings: Russell Oakey (whose wife, Jan, survives him), Dorene Oakey Stoney (Bill), Charles Naylor (whose wife, Carma survives him), and Carolin Larsen (and her late husband, Earle). Marylin is survived by her seven devoted children: Nannette (Joel) Judd, David (Lori) Neubert, Jane (Spencer) Mack, Paul (Marie) Neubert, Bryce Neubert, Reed (Lisa) Neubert, and Joel (Christine) Neubert. Marylin's life was abundantly blessed with a remarkable posterity of 104, including 31 grandchildren (plus 20 spouses), 71 great-grandchildren (plus 3 spouses), and two great-great-grandchildren.
Marylin's greatest trial was the unexpected loss of her sweetheart, Bud, who passed away on June 4, 1971, in Culver City, California, after 17 years of marriage. Following Bud's passing, Marylin courageously embraced the responsibility of raising and supporting her seven children. This monumental task was lovingly supported by Marylin and Bud's parents and extended family, as well as many devoted church members and friends.
Recognizing that teaching school offered the most suitable schedule for a single parent raising a large family, Marylin completed a teaching certificate at the University of Southern California in Elementary Education. She then moved to Utah to be closer to family, where she taught at Sharon Elementary School in Orem for 21 years. She deeply treasured her years in the classroom and always delighted in reconnecting with former students and fellow teachers.
In 1985, Marylin auditioned and received a call to sing in the renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir. She cherished her weekly opportunities to sing with the Choir and traveled extensively, performing throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Japan and Europe. In addition to her mission with the Choir, she worked at the BYU Alumni House, and served missions for the Church at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City, at the Church's Humanitarian Center, at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, and as a Pathway Worldwide missionary. She also served in the Provo and Mt. Timpanogos Temples.
In her later years, Marylin faced an additional struggle, becoming legally blind due to macular degeneration. While difficult to accept, she refused to let this challenge slow her down. She attended a school for the blind in Salt Lake City and rearranged many aspects of her life. As her vision declined, she continued to serve as the Ward Relief Society President, and then as the Ward Chorister where every week she memorized the words to the hymns being sung on Sunday.
It's a fact that Marylin did not want to miss out on anything. She attended just about every baby blessing, baptism, ordination, missionary farewell or homecoming, sporting event, musical performance or recital of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved family dinners and parties, and cherished her annual Neubert Family Christmas sing-a-long.
Throughout her life, Marylin remained an active and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At a young age, she gained a strong testimony of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and was an avid student of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She listened to hundreds of books and talks and would often call her children, exclaiming, "You've got to read this talk-it's so powerful!" She deeply loved the Savior, Jesus Christ, and found immense peace and hope in the doctrines of the Gospel, especially the Plan of Salvation.
Her family, who dearly love her, will forever cherish their memories of her, especially her warm and familiar phone calls, always beginning with, "Hi Honey, how are you doing?" Marylin was truly an unparalleled wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, whose love blessed the lives of her entire posterity.
