We were gifted with this incredible kind soul as a son for too short a time (27 years). Mason welcomed life and everyone around him with open arms. He fiercely loved his God, his family, and his friends. He touched so many in his short time with us. The boys on his high school basketball team grew up together and won the State championship together. Mason was never the strongest, fastest, or best player, but he was a team player and held those boys close in his heart, along with his other Immaculate Conception, Watterson and St. Charles classmates. He enjoyed friends in his Christian book club and on his Pelotonia team. His circle grew wider as an OSU undergraduate student in Biomedical Sciences.
His contagious laugh and booming voice were remembered by his fellow OSU Medical School students, several of whom honored him at a vigil held on August 7.As one classmate said,"He was a big personality in the best way you can be, where he very much filled the room up with his love, his caring, and his energy. "Mason was to start his 2nd year at OSU Medical School on August 9. He was a fierce advocate for cancer research and wanted to be a surgeon. Mason worked at Fairfield Medical Center vascular surgery as a medical assistant and did an internship in anesthesiology at Vanderbilt. He participated in an OSU surgery internship this past summer with the liver/kidney transplant team and another with the colorectal surgery team. When graduating from Biomedical Sciences, his program leader described Mason by saying, "He makes being a nice guy look really easy." For several years, Mason was a guest speaker for first-year medical students about familial genetic cancers, since he, himself, had Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, a rare genetic disease. He volunteered time at the James Cancer Hospital working with families as a family advocate. He even tutored students in Organic Chemistry. He would help anyone who needed him.
While we are proud of all his accomplishments, the Mason we treasured is the one who woke us at 6am on OSU game days loudly blasting the OSU Fight Song and marching around the house. He took a full day each Christmas to make us Beef Wellington with mushrooms, even though he hated mushrooms, because he knew we loved them. Mason would go to Marvel movies with friends at midnight in Columbus on the night it was released and then drive halfway to Cincinnati the next morning to meet his sister and watch the exact same movie, because it was their sibling tradition. He would wait until 12:01am to go to White Castle on Fridays of lent with his buddies, because it was fun. Mason came home every Thursday to do laundry whether he had laundry or not, and it always felt like a nice surprise. He had cooking competitions with his sister, trying to beat her in their preparation of Bobby Flay recipes. He won and felt bad about it, telling his sister that her dish looked really good. Mason enjoyed time with his cousins who created the "cousin crawl" that normally landed them bar hopping together. He loved Lake Cumberland, July 4th and Buckeye Country Musicfest. He loved his 2 dogs and lollygagging around the lake on our pontoon at 2 mph while listening to country tunes. Mason loved golf trips, sports, trivia night, March Madness, tailgating, and everything Ohio State Buckeyes.
Mason was excited to ride 102 miles on the Spin Doctor Team for cancer research. This was his 3rd and longest Pelotonia ride. He suffered an undetermined medical issue at the 100-mile mark and sadly did not recover. As he left to ride, the last thing he said to his mom (a cancer survivor) was, "I'll be thinking of you tomorrow, Mom."
Mason welcomed life and people with open arms. He loved everyone and everything around him (except mushrooms). He died doing what he did best – making a difference. He was so very much loved. We will miss you so much, Mason. Thank you for gifting us with so many memories. Mom, Dad, and Maria.
