Matthew John Coan was surrounded by his family when he went to be with the Lord on January 5th. He was born in Kirksville, Missouri to Dr. Paul J. Coan and Dorr J. Fikar-Coan on August 25, 1944. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in Farmington, Missouri and had the honor of completing his junior year in Munich, Germany. Matt then went on to Kent State University in Ohio where he met the love of his life Nancy Zinz and graduated with his BA in 1966. Matt and Nancy married on March 19th, 1966 and had two children; Christin Anne and Michael John. Shortly after he married Nancy, Matt joined the Navy as a Pilot in 1967. He took great pride in serving our country over the next 20 years. In December 1987 he retired as a decorated Lt. Commander. In his retirement Matt enjoyed traveling, had a passion for cooking, enjoyed playing bridge and going to the gun range with his buddies. He was a 20 year member of the Village Church and was frequently found in the kitchen cooking for church events. Matt is survived by his wife, Nancy, and his daughter Christin (Dennis) Hutchinson, grandchildren EmmaLee and Zachary and his son Michael (Marianna) Coan and his granddaughter Celina. A Celebration of Life including Military full honors will be held on February 4th at 11:00 am at The Village Church, 4225 Pacetti Road, St. Augustine.
