Matthew John Glenn
December 28, 1966 - December 14, 2021
Matthew (Matt) J. Glenn of Caldwell, NJ passed away at Mountainside Hospital on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 14, of heart failure. Matt is survived by his wife, Kate (nee DeGroat) Glenn, and son, Matthew (15) and daughter, Morgan (13), as well as siblings, James G. Glenn III of Roseland, NJ (his spouse Kelli), Kevin P. Glenn of Miami Beach FL (his spouse Gabriella), Kathleen Ullrich of Rockaway, NJ (nee Glenn, and her spouse Bill) and Timothy Glenn of Caldwell, NJ, in addition to many nieces (Alexandra Ullrich, Marlys and Reaghan Glenn) and nephews (Conor Ullrich, Kevin J. Glenn, and his spouse Nicole Glenn, Griffin L. Glenn, and Patrick J. Glenn), mother-in-law, Jacquelyn DeGroat and canine companion, Max.
Matt was a loving and caring husband, father, brother, uncle, and son. He was the youngest of 5 children of the late James and Teresa Glenn, growing up in West Caldwell, NJ. He attended St. Aloysius Grammar School, James Caldwell High School (where he was an outstanding student and varsity baseball player), Rutgers University (BA, 1989) and earned his MBA in Marketing from Rutgers University Business School (MBA, 1991). He was a very successful sales executive with several public and private companies over the past 30+ years.
Matt particularly enjoyed time with his family, coaching each of his kids in sports, and was viewed by his siblings and most others as "the most fun Glenn" of his generation, he was always upbeat and "shiny" (i.e., always brought a joy for living to events, occasions, and people he touched). He was incredibly smart, but with a rare humility, an amazing quick wit, and terrific sense of humor, and an unrelenting optimism and courage in the face of adversity that inspired greatly those closest to him.
He had a terrific big heart, wonderful capacity for compassion and love, was incredibly loyal and sturdy in his support of friends and family (even when they were wrong!). He was a avid sports fan, loved the NY Rangers, the Yankees, and above all Rutgers University athletics, as a season ticket holder and often-suffering, but devoted fan. He had a deep abiding faith in God and was a devout Catholic and life-long parishioner at St. Aloysius in Caldwell. We love him with all our hearts, which are breaking as this is written - we will always hold him dear and ask for his prayers for us as he sits looking down on us from Heaven.
Relatives and friends are invited for visitation on Friday from 4 pm through 8 pm in the Shook-Farmer Funeral Home, 45 Roseland Avenue, Roseland, NJ 07068, shookfarmer.com. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday 12:30 pm at St. Aloysius Church, Caldwell, NJ. Cremation services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, crohnscolitisfoundation.org or to the National Conservancy, NJ Chapter, nature.org.
