SALEM- It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Maureen Joan Moroney, beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, who departed this world on June 8, 2025, at the age of 88 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Born on April 29, 1937, in Troy, New York, Maureen grew up in Stoneham, Massachusetts, before settling in Salem, where she resided for the remainder of her life, raising her family and cultivating enduring connections within her community.
Maureen was a dedicated and compassionate registered nurse, having earned her nursing degree from Salem State University. She spent many years working as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Bon Secours Hospital in Methuen, Massachusetts, before transitioning into physical therapy at the Jewish Rehabilitation Center in Swampscott. Her unwavering commitment to healthcare and her passion for learning enriched the lives of many she cared for throughout her career.
A doting mother to her two daughters, Colleen Scarpola and Kelly Simone, Maureen took great joy in her role as a grandmother. Maureen's love for her family was exemplified by the simple, joyous moments she shared with them, filled with laughter and warmth.
Maureen had an exuberant spirit and a love for music that resonated throughout her life. She was an enthusiastic member of the Sweet Adelines singing organization and enjoyed being part of the Peabody Council on Aging Senior Ladies Drill Team. Her passion for singing and dancing, alongside her proud Irish heritage, brought her immense joy, especially during the annual celebration of St. Patrick's Day, where her favorite Irish music could be heard filling her home for hours.
In addition to her love for music, Maureen was an avid sports fan, often heard cheering on her favorite Boston teams and PGA golfers. She cherished the quiet moments spent reading, completing crossword puzzles, and watching game shows, always beginning her day with a beloved cup of Dunkin' coffee.
Maureen's bright spirit and infectious laughter had a remarkable way of bringing happiness to all who knew her. Her motto, "Laugh, Sing, and Dance," is a testament to the joyful life she led.
Maureen is survived by her loving daughters Colleen and her husband Dan of Salem and Kelly Simone and her husband Joe of Peabody, her cherished grandchildren, Zachary and Colin Scarpola, and Katelyn and Corey Simone, 5 great grandchildren and her beloved grand pup Beau.
Maureen was preceded in death by her husband George Moroney, her parents William and Mary (Harrington) Buckley, her brothers William and Robert Buckley, and her sister Joyce Wing.
A funeral service will take place on Friday June 13, 2025 beginning at 12:00 PM at Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. Salem. Visitation will take place from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM prior to the funeral service. Maureen will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Cemetery, located at 57 Orne St, Salem, MA following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Care Dimensions 75 Sylvan St. Suite B-102 Danvers, MA 01923.
Maureen Joan Moroney will be profoundly missed, but her legacy of love, laughter, and passion for life will forever resonate in the hearts of her family and friends. For more information or online guestbook, please visit www.MurphyFuneralHome.com or call 978-744-0497.
