Maxine Judith Engel, 79, of Daggett, passed away Sunday, August 31, 2025 at Lakeview Assisted Living in Gladstone.

She was born on April 16, 1946 in Escanaba, daughter to Omar "Joe" and Genevieve (Keshick) Sagataw. Maxine was raised in Hannahville and then graduated from Holy Name High School, class of 1964.

Maxine married Dennis Jay Engel on May 7, 1975 in Iron Mountain, MI.

She is a member of the West Bagley Homemakers, Red Hat Society, and was an active member of Precious Blood Church in Stephenson. Maxine loved to crochet blankets, cook, and take care of her family.

Among survivors include her children, Dyan Engel, Kerry Haley, and Sara Wandahsega; grandchildren, John (Brooke) Harris, Ashlie Topper, Taylor Joslin, Joshua Haley, Miguel and Adriana Altamirano, Rory, Harley, and Jaiden Mireau; five great grandchildren; siblings, Terry and Ramona Sagataw, Joe and Jackie Sagataw, Connie Sagataw, Dan Sagataw, Gregory Sagataw, Bob (Patti) Sagataw, and Pat Sagataw; and brothers-in-law, Larry (Ruthie) Engel, Jack Engel, and Fred (Donna) Engel.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Steve Sagataw.

Visitation will be on Thursday, September 4th from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. EST at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1 p.m. EST with Rev. Vinoy Thomas Panthilapadam officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the Bark River Twp. Cemetery.
