Michael Backs, age 64, of Petersburg, passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at his home.

He was born March 1, 1959 in Springfield, Illinois, the son of Kent Eugene and Nancy Lee (Huff) Backs.

Michael married Jennifer Schurman on February 20, 1993 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Petersburg, IL. She preceded him in death in 2019.

Mourning his passing are his daughter, Bridget Davis; one granddaughter, Emily Bennett; brother, Mark (Jill) Backs; sister, Leigh Ann Backs; one niece; one nephew; great nieces; one great nephew; and his beloved dog, Dyson.

He is also preceded in death by his parents.

Michael graduated from PORTA High School in 1977. He later attended Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal.

He worked for the State of Illinois Corrections for 30 years as a Correctional Officer.

Michael loved fishing, golfing, and staying at his cabin at Matanza Beach. He especially loved his time with Bridget and Emily. He loved baking apple pies for the Greenview Labor Day Celebration, winning multiple times.

He really enjoyed spending time with friends at local establishments.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 2, 2023 at German Sandridge Cemetery near Petersburg. Casual dress is requested. Rev. Ken Gennicks will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Shriner's Hospital or Menard Animal Protection.
