Michael Joseph Barnes Sr., born on December 15, 1959, peacefully made his final Irish goodbye on June 19, 2024. He was born to the late James Robert Barnes Jr. and the late Shirley Evaline Barnes (nee Shaw) in St. Louis, MO. Michael’s life touched many hearts, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He leaves behind many loved ones including his father-in-law James (the late Glenda) Reitz.

Michael will be dearly missed by his devoted wife of 43 years Melissa A. Barnes nee Reitz. He and his siblings - the late James Barnes, Muffett (Ray) Hernandez, the late Dan (Donna) Barnes and his twin, Mark (Sherry) Barnes were his first and true partners in crime. He was a loving father to Molly (Ryan) Wolfsberger, Michael Barnes II and Mallory (Brad) Trower; a cherished "Pop" to his grandchildren Michael “Little Buddy “Niedringhaus, Jillian “Chickadee” Niedringhaus, Weston “Man Cub” Trower, Nolan “Little Rascal” Trower, June “Baby Taters” Trower, and his four-legged grandson, Buzzy. He was also a devoted Godfather to the late Brendan Barnes and late Stephen Hernandez. He was an uncle, cousin, and friend to many.

Michael attended Our Lady of Sorrows grade school in south St. Louis before graduating from Bishop Dubourg High School in 1978—a foundation upon which he built a lifetime of friendships. Outside of spending time with family and friends, Mike found solace in hunting, fishing, golfing, and enjoying stogies and Busch beer when vacationing in Orange Beach, Alabama. The beach was his happy place. Notably remembered for forming a softball team named the "Buzzards" with his brother, Mark—a reflection of their shared humor and camaraderie.

A veteran St. Louis City Firefighter for 35 years, Michael wholeheartedly served his community with unwavering dedication. He was promoted to Fire Captain in 2007 and finished the remainder of his firefighting career at Hook and Ladder 6. Known affectionately as "Mad Dog," his story telling, one liners and words of wisdom will remain with all those who love him.

Today we bid farewell to Michael—a man whose life epitomized courage, love, and friendship. Mike was a proud Buzzard, Hibernian, and a Justifiably Proud member of IAFF Local 73.
