Dr. Michael J. Cavanaugh, a longtime resident of Mahopac, NY passed away on Monday, September 9, 2024 at the age of 85. He was born in Astoria, Queens, NY on July 21, 1939, the son of Michael Patrick and Delia (Lynch) Cavanaugh.
Michael served honorably in the US Army and upon his expiration of term, he entered the Army Reserves where he was promoted to a Reserve Commissioned Officer serving in the Medical Service Corps. He retired from the reserves with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Michael earned his Bachelor's degree at Manhattan College, earned a Master's Degree at Harvard Business School and his Doctorate at Columbia University. He was a college professor at both LIU and Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY and a member of Mensa.
Michael was a member and past president of the Putnam Alliance. He was a member of VFW Post 5491 in Mahopac and a collector of military memorabilia. He enjoyed studying military history as was evident in his large collection of books on the subject.
On June 20, 1970 he married Catherine Catterson at St. Joseph's Church in Astoria. In addition to Catherine, he is survived by his sister, Margaret Cavanaugh of Astoria; his nephews, Joseph and William Catterson; his niece, Eileen Catterson and his grandniece, Mia Tiefer.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 19 from 2-5 pm at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home, 692 US Route 6, Mahopac. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 20 at 10 am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 221 East Lake Blvd., Mahopac. Private cremation will follow.
