Michael Gerard Nelson, age 67, of Fairview Township passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 28, 1958, Michael was the eldest son of Leo E. Nelson and Genevive M. Nelson, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth J. (Mulkie) Nelson.
Michael is survived by his loving significant other, Elizabeth (BA) Levine, who remained steadfast by his side through life's joys and challenges. He also leaves behind his siblings: Mark Nelson and his wife, Janice Nelson; Matthew Nelson; Kim DiRienzo; Mary Huffman and her husband, Clint Huffman; and his brother-in-law John Mulkie and his wife, Patti Mulkie. He is also survived by his extended family in St. Louis, and special cousins Christine and Howard Stone, along with his nieces and nephews: Sarah Nelson, Ryan Huffman, John DiRienzo Jr, Catherine Nelson, Conner Huffman, Emilia DiRienzo, Caitlyn Lindemuth, Sarah Lostumbo, and Bethany Mulkie.
A proud graduate of McDowell High School, Class of 1976, Michael went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Grove City College in 1980. He then pursued his Juris Doctor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, graduating in 1983. Never one to stop learning, he earned a Master of Laws in Taxation from Villanova University in 2018 - demonstrating his commitment to both his profession and personal growth.
Michael dedicated his career to the practice of law, building a reputation for integrity, intellect, and compassion. He began in private practice, and in 2005, became a partner with Marsh Spaeder Baur Spaeder & Schaaf, LLP. His focus was estate planning, tax law, and real estate law, and he was a respected member of the Erie County Bar Association.
Beyond his professional life, Michael gave generously to his community. He served on the Fairview School Board and was an active member of the Epsilon Pi Fraternity at Grove City College, where he served on the EP Alumni Association Board of Directors. His connection to his alma mater and fraternity remained throughout his life.
Michael had a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world and found joy in simple pleasures. He adored his Sheepadoodle, Henley, and found peace in outdoor activities - including golf, sailing, and kayaking. He was a passionate Villanova sports fan, a skilled cook known for culinary flair, and an avid collector of space memorabilia. Whether playing cards with friends, soaking up the sun at the beach, or pausing to admire a breathtaking sunset, Michael embraced each day with curiosity, humor, and gratitude. He truly loved life.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at St. Vincent Hospital; the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Neurological Restoration; the hospice team from AseraCare; his personal physician, Dr. Behm; and Michael's dedicated caregivers: Lisa, Quinten, and Nancy. As Michael's health declined, he found deep comfort and strength in faith. Pastor Jim Scarpitti of Grace Church was a guiding presence in his final weeks, praying with him, nurturing his spiritual growth, offering communion, and providing an enduring hope even in a difficult time.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street,
Erie, PA, on Friday, May 9, from 4 to 8 p.m., and are invited to a funeral service on Saturday, at 10:00 a.m., at Grace Church, 7300 Grubb Road. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
