Michael D. Osmundson of Silver Bay, Minnesota passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
Mike was born on August 8, 1952 in Moorhead, Minnesota to Omar and Mavis Osmundson. He grew up in Averill, Minnesota. He attended elementary school in Averill, in their small school. In 7th grade, he went to Glyndon, Minnesota for the remainder of his schooling and graduated in 1970. Mike was an exceptional athlete and excelled in football and basketball. He received the Kenneth Mochenbacher Award for outstanding athlete. After high school, Mike attended Moorhead State College for a year, where he played football and basketball. After a year of college, he decided college life wasn’t for him. He went on the road as a cross-country trucker. He drove from 1971 to 1976, covering over 500,000 miles all over the country. In 1974, he met Peggy Jo Yokom on a blind date. They were married on August 20, 1977. Mike then went to Moorhead Technical School where he became a machine operator. He returned to Moorhead State. In 1979, he transferred to the University of Minnesota where he graduated in 1981 with his BS Metallurgical Engineer. Mike was employed in 1981 by Reserve Mining Company in Silver Bay. He truly loved his work. He also has a U.S. patent for an iron oxide reduction process with his partner, Ken Judkins. When the plant shut down in 1986, Mike and his family moved to Phoenix to work for Arizona Public Service. In 1989 the family returned to Silver Bay where Mike retired in 2013. He continued as a consultant. Mike traveled all over the world and put in approximately 850,000 air miles while working for Cleveland Cliffs.
Mike loved to golf, fish and hunt. We enjoyed time at our lake cabin with Peg’s brother Bill and his wife, Cathy. We have many fond memories of the lake and all the fun times there. He also built a hunting shack with a lot of help from Jerry, Rob, Chuck, Dan, Sam, and our son Kyle. We were blessed to have amazing friends from the Silver Bay area. I’d name names, but you know who you are and how much we love all of you. He had so many fond memories of golf and fishing trips with his brothers from other mothers.
Mike is survived by his wife of almost 48 years, Peggy Jo; daughter, Kimberly Osmundson of Silver Bay and son, Kyle (Adrianne) Osmundson of Duluth; five grandchildren, Cole and Matthew Anderson, Amelia, Ada and Lucy Osmundson; a brother, Daryl (Penni), a sister, Ruth and many nieces and nephews.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, and his oldest brother, Harold.
