Michael Sabourin passed away at the age of 72, surrounded by his family. Born August 1952, in
Detroit, MI, Mike's journey was one marked by dedication, compassion, and a boundless love for
life.
Mike attended Wayne State University and Ferris State University where he earned a Bachelor of
Science in Engineering and an Associate Degree in Diesel Mechanics. Mike went on to obtain his
MBA from the University of Michigan, allowing him to pursue his dream position and creating a
proud Michigan Wolverine.
Mike dedicated his career to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, becoming Director of the
Automotive Emissions Lab, where his talent and dedication contributed to the betterment of our
natural world. Before his time at the EPA, he worked as a diesel mechanic and a mechanics
instructor at Wayne County Community college. Mike was also a Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra
Leone from 1976 to 1978 working as a heavy equipment mechanic on road building projects. His
work reflected a deep-seated belief in the power of community and cooperation.
Mike loved building and fixing cars and drag racing. Moreover, he loved music and found great joy in
playing guitar and singing with family and friends. Mike's annual Super Bowl Parties, a tradition that
spanned 30 years, featured a halftime show performed by all the musicians in attendance,
sometimes extending well into the second half of the game. Mike loved sports and enjoyed
coaching kids, especially his own, in baseball, soccer, basketball, and cross country. Mike instilled
the values of teamwork, perseverance, and fun in the hearts of young athletes.
Above all, Mike was a family man. He met the love of his life when they were teenagers, realizing
early on that Anne was the person he wanted to spend his life with. Their love story spanned over
f
ive decades and several continents. Together, they raised their children, Claire and Lor, in a house
full of creativity, energy, imagination, curiosity, and songs. He taught his children the importance of
respecting the dignity of themselves and others. Mike loved his family deeply, and always let them
know through daily conversation, thoughtful cards, and long toasts during special dinners.
Those who knew Mike witnessed his intelligence, thoughtfulness, and love. His presence was a
source of stability and encouragement for all who had the pleasure of his company.
In the words of one of Mike's favorites, Bob Marley, "The greatness of a man is not in how much
wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively." Mike
lived his life holding up his strong convictions and supporting those around him.
As we say goodbye, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and passion. His legacy will continue in
the memories of his beloved family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
Mike is survived by his wife, Anne, his children Claire and Lor, brothers, sisters and in-laws, Joe
(Donna), Pat (Carol), Paul (Steffanie), Jim (Eve), Bob (Robyn), John (Jayne), Mary (Norm), and Anne
(Redmond), and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and
Virginia Sabourin.
