ADRIAN- Michelle Lynn VanderHorst, born February 23, 1966, died in her home on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at the age of 59. Michelle was a 1984 graduate of Onsted High School where she participated in 4-H and girls basketball.
After high school she served in the U.S. Army for eight years. She was stationed in Germany and Savannah, Georgia before returning to Michigan. She retired from the Army with the rank Sergeant E5.
Michell obtained her Associates in Nursing and followed it later with her Bachelors in Nursing from Siena Heights University. She was a labor and delivery nurse for 25 years at the former Herrick and Bixby Hospitals. She spent her last years working at ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital in Adrian. She had a special interest with breastfeeding support and infant bereavement. Michelle loved crafting of all kinds from knitting, sewing, crocheting, to making grave blankets for her parents' graves. She was passionate about her flower beds and vegetable garden she grew each year. She was a lifelong traveler and loved adventures such as camping, fishing, cruises and geocaching. Michelle taught her children how to camp and fish over the years on their annual camping trips. She loved new experiences from kayaking Pictured Rocks National Park to relaxing on a beach somewhere. Her recent time was spent in her most beloved role of grandma, teaching Christopher his letters and numbers and so much more.
She was welcomed to heaven by her parents, H.Chris VanderHorst and Theresa VanderHorst; her biological mother, Judy E. VanderHorst; and nephew, Preston. She is survived by her three children, Millard, Joshua and Brittany VanderHorst; Her grandson, Christopher VanderHorst; siblings, Christopher (Susan) VanderHorst of Merrit MI, Dean (Stephanie) VanderHorst of Waterloo, IN, Yvonne (Kevin) Busdecker of Phoenix AZ, Charlotte (Julio) Martinez of Granger, IN, Andrea (David) Deihl of Waterloo, IN, and Tonya (Joseph) Bielecki of Holland, OH; her 30 nieces and nephews and 9 great-nieces and nephews, and multiple aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as many co-workers and the countless number of patients whose lives were impacted through her work.
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Friday, April 11, 2025, from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Anderson-Marry Funeral Home in Adrian. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, April 12, at 11:00 a.m., led by Pastor Brandon Rickard. The Adrian American Legion Post 97 and the Lenawee County Nurse Honor Guard will both pay tribute to her years of selfless service to her country and to countless patients. Cremation will take place following services.
