Mildred (Granny) Smith McGee, 93, ran into the arms of Jesus at 5:00 am on October 19, 2024. She passed peacefully, in her home, surrounded by family. Born on March 8, 1931, to Flossie May and Carl Lee Smith in Valdese, North Carolina, Mildred was one of seven children, growing up with five brothers and one sister. She graduated from Valdese High School in 1949. On July 4, 1953, Mildred married the love of her life, Ted Charles McGee. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared 53 years of marriage.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Ted, her six siblings, and her son-in-law, John Hampton. She is survived by her three children, Rick (Diane), Chuck (Sheri), and Angie (Jerry); four grandchildren, Kevin (Jami), Brittany (Bryant), Hannah (Aaron), and Jacob (Bailey); six great-grandchildren, Sadie, Easton, Rawlings, Samuel, Campbell, and Elizabeth, and three bonus great-grandchildren, Lucas, Lawson, and Landon. She was also a cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews, who held a special place in her heart. Mildred is also survived by her loyal and loving dog, Bella, who never left her side.
A woman of deep faith, Mildred was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church in Mount Holly, where she taught Sunday School for many years and was an active member of the Timeless Treasures senior adult group. Mildred was known not only for her devotion to her family and her faith, but also for her independence and sass. Whether it was shopping with friends or taking trips with her group from church, Mildred was always on the go. She also had a passion for sports and was a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan, rarely missing a game.
Mildred will be remembered by family and friends for her strong faith in Jesus, her unwavering devotion to her family, and the joy she brought to our lives. The family would like to acknowledge the care and compassion provided by her hospice nurse, Victoria Morris.
The family will greet guests from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at Grace Baptist Church, Mount Holly. A service to celebrate her life will begin at 12:00 p.m. also at the church. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery, Mount Holly.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Carolina Caring Foundation, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC 28658 or by planting a tree in Western, North Carolina.
