Neil was born in 1939 to Josephine and John Abitabilo in New York City, having been raised in Astoria and Flushing, Queens, NY. Neil graduated from Seton Hall University with a BS Degree in Biology in 1961. He then continued his education and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 1965 from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Neil served his country honorably as a Captain in the United States Army, Dental Corps, stateside during the Vietnam Era. Neil moved to Bridgewater in 1969, where he owned and operated his dental practice until he retired in 2017. After retirement, he moved to Forked River full time in 2021. Neil was President and a founding member of Bridgewater Baseball, Inc. An avid Yankee fan, he enjoyed watching the Yankees and attended many games with his family. At 17, Neil was asked to try out for the Yankees. He was President of the Jaycees Somerville Chapter in 1972, and a 30 year member of the Rotary Somerville-Bridgewater Chapter where he received the Paul Harris Award and served as Sergeant at Arms. Neil was a member of the Lacey Elks Lodge 2518 in Forked River. In his spare time, he enjoyed boating, fishing, reading, and doing volunteer work.
Neil is predeceased by his loving wife Diane Abitabilo (1997) and sister Nina Rossi (2012).
Neil is survived by son John, son Jim and his wife Larkin, daughter Donna, brother Louis, two grandsons, Nolan and Devon (who knew him as "Poppy"), many nieces and nephews, and companion Barbara.
Neil will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
We invite you to celebrate his life on Monday August 11th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at the Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave, Somerville, NJ. Prayers will be 9am Tuesday, August 12 at the funeral home followed by a 10am mass of Christian burial at Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville. Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery in Bridgewater.
