NYPD, Retired Detective The Jascewsky and Gitto families celebrate the proud life of service led by their loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Nicholas Edward Jascewsky, Jr. A lifelong New Yorker, Nick was born in Brooklyn in 1939 to Anna and Nicholas Edward, Sr. He was an honorable veteran of the New York City Police Department, where he served for 22 years. He graduated from the police academy and joined the force in 1964, and was ultimately promoted to detective. Although he retired in 1986, he remained a proud officer throughout his life. Nick married Joan Colletti in 1959, and together they raised their family in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. In his final days, he spoke of Joan as the only woman he had ever loved, grateful to spend his last weeks at home by her side. Together, they had three children: Nicholas Edward III (Anita), John (Steve), and Lisa (Frankie). He was also a dedicated Pop to his six grandchildren Caitlin, Nicholas, Anthony, Michael, Nicky, and Cheech (Frank). His grandson, Anthony, follows in his legacy as a distinguished officer in the NYPD and now wears his grandfather's badge. After retirement, Nick worked with his son at his Brooklyn-based beer-and-soda distribution center before settling in Staten Island with much of his family. Always cracking a joke, he brought warmth to every room. Nick passed away on the morning of August 24, 2025, in Staten Island after bravely battling colon cancer. ''Strong like bull,'' as he often said, his words became a reflection of his tenacity and perseverance. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Nicholas Sr., his sisters Maryanne and Julie, and his brother Bobby. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan, his three children and their spouses, and his six grandchildren. A Funeral service will be at 7:45 PM on Tuesday at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc. located at 28 Eltingville Blvd Staten Island, New York 10312. Arrangements include private cremation. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York.
