Norma L. Zimny (Cooney), age 86, of Wilmington, formerly of Lewes, DE, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, October 10, 2025.
Norma was born in Wilmington, daughter of the late Dorothy Handlin and Albert Merritt. Norma graduated from P. S. Dupont High School and was a long-time employee at Blue Cross Blue Shield until her retirement. In her free time, Norma enjoyed traveling, bowling, reading on the beach, watching tennis, and cheering on her beloved Philadelphia Phillies. Norma's family was also extremely important to her, and she was her grandchildren and great grandchildren's number one fan: doing her best to attend their games and matches. In addition to her parents, Norma was predeceased by her loving husbands, George Donald Cooney in 1990, and Francis P. Zimny in 2022; and her sisters, Jean Ahern, Charlotte Holloway, and Deborah Lober.
Norma is survived by her sons and their wives, Brian (Mary) Cooney, Jeffrey (Elaine) Cooney, and Daniel (Judi) Cooney; grandchildren, Matthew (Molly) Cooney, Monica (Jimmy) Keady, Trevor (Alex) Cooney, Stacey Cooney, Dana (Rob) Llano, Patrick (Kaela) Baird, and Zachary (Megan) Cooney; step-daughter Connie Zimny-Christopher and her children Steven Shelton, Katie (Matt) Boyle and Sam Green; fourteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close family and friends whom she all loved.
A visitation for Norma will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025, at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808, where friends and family may call from 11:30am to 12:30pm, with a memorial service following at 12:30pm. Burial will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Norma's name to SL24: Unlocke the Light Foundation (www.unlockethelight.com)
