Paul Nangle Obituary
Nangle, Paul and Cheryl
With heavy and grateful hearts, we announce the memorial Mass for Paul and Cheryl Nangle at Saint Louis Abbey Church. From the moment Cheryl and Paul met, their lives were beautifully intertwined and now they are together again.
Paul Joseph Nangle, born January 8, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Judge James Francis Nangle and Harriett Shafer Nangle, was the seventh of twelve children. With six boys and six girls, the Nangle home was lively and full of excitement. The boys followed their father's passions for law and baseball - each becoming a lawyer and a lifelong Cardinals fan. Paul passed away October 3, 2025, at home in Anchorage, Alaska, and has been welcomed into heaven by his wife, parents and siblings, Jimmy, Nancy, Bruce, Donald, Cele and Timmy.
Paul attended St. Roch's Catholic School and graduated from Saint Louis Priory School in 1961. He earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Regis College in Denver and Juris Doctor from the University of Tulsa College of Law, where an influential professor diverted his future. Soon after graduating, Paul embarked on the adventure of a lifetime boarding a plane for Alaska on March 18, 1970.
Cheryl Gehring Nangle, born August 21, 1945, in Cleveland, Ohio, to James Henry Gehring and Bernice O'Malley Gehring, predeceased Paul on his 80th birthday, January 8, 2023.
Cheryl attended St. Angela Merici School in Fairview Park and St. Augustine Academy in Lakewood, Ohio. She earned her associate degree from Marymount College in Arlington, Virginia. Cheryl graduated from Georgetown University business school's first coed class.
After graduation, Cheryl visited a friend in St. Louis and showcased her piano talents. Her friend's father, Judge Nangle, told Cheryl, "I have a son I would like you to meet." Fate drew Paul to Cleveland a couple months later. Paul's Mom completed the parental matchmaking, "I know a nice girl in Cleveland." When the two met, Paul and Cheryl fell in love. On June 17, 1971, Cheryl and Paul were married at Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage, Alaska.
Paul and Cheryl spent their lives united in business (law, real estate, promotional advertising) and community (Holy Cross, Rotary, Opera). Cheryl and Paul were a formidable team who taught their children the importance of faith, humility, and hard work with unending love, forgiveness and joy. Their unwavering commitment to each other was especially present as Paul confronted cancer and then Cheryl PSP. On June 17, 2021, Cheryl and Paul renewed their wedding vows after 50 years of marriage again at Holy Family Cathedral surrounded by their children and grandchildren, celebrating their true Alaskan adventurous love story.
Paul and Cheryl are survived by their children, Kerry (Chris Stanek), Joey (Jessica) and Christy Koehl (Joe); and seven grandchildren, Jack, Cole and Will Stanek; McKayla and Dempsey Nangle; Ryan and McKinley Koehl. Their legacy continues through the countless lives they touched and the love they nurtured in their family and community.
Services: A celebration of their lives will begin Thursday, January 8, 2026 at Saint Louis Abbey Church with 10 AM visitation and 11 AM Mass, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery and reception at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac.
